PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

(Company) Boulder, CO

MANUFACTURING TOOL DESIGNER – Member of the technical staff.  Developed semi automated and automated tooling for a DWDM optical switch manufacturing line.  Tooling optically aligned fiber input/output blocks to free-space optical components.  This process included vacuum and manual pick and placement of components to submicron positions (<0.5um and <0.2 degrees).  Multiple machine vision systems were used to provide alignment feedback and ensure tolerance locations were met.  Aerotech precision stages were used to move components into location.  All tooling components, materials and finishes met class 100 clean room requirements.  Coordinated manufacturing process development, which consisted of work instruction development, tolerance and gage R&R studies and tool qualification and calibration. Implemented torque drivers throughout the line.  Designed and developed cleaning fixtures/kanban storage.  Designs produced in compliance with ASME Y14.5M 1994 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing using SolidWorks CAD system.  {January 2001-May 2002}

(Company) Longmont, CO

SENIOR PROCESS ENGINEER/LEAD – Implemented process to install top covers onto disk drives in a high volume production environment for both existing and New Product Introduction.  This process included the placement of the Head Disk Assembly and top cover into the fixture and maintaining alignment of +/-.005 @3 sigma between the two components while driving screws to a required torque.  This station involved the use of a torque driver, screw presenters, Seiko robot and fixture. Footprint of the station 24” X 24” X 60”.  Robot picked, placed and installed screws.  Process included all qualifications of tool, CpK studies, sequence card, maintenance/setup procedures and calibration procedures of the station.  {January 1999-January 2001}

SENIOR TOOL ENGINEER - Managed projects designed in house as well as out of house.  Tooling projects included Top Cover install, Boardmate install and Current Controlled Torque Driver.  Wrote and maintained schedules and budget information associated with projects.  Presented information to management as needed.  Developed solutions to maintain project requirements.  Performed and managed all tooling design aspects, including modeling, detailing, documenting, procuring, and tolerance/CpK studies.  Produced designs in compliance with ANSI Y14.5M-1982 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.  Used Pro/E and AutoCAD CAD Systems.  {September 1996-January 1999}

SENIOR PRODUCT DESIGNER - Designed and redesigned mechanical components including layouts used in the 3.5 disk drive product.  Designed and maintained cast and machined actuator, disk clamp, bearing cartridge, voice coil and voice coil motor.  Also responsible for tooling, test fixtures and ISO 9000 auditing.  Produced designs in compliance with ANSI Y14.5M-1982 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Using Pro/E and AutoCAD CAD Systems.  {February 1995-September 1996}

HSA (Head Stack Assembly) TOOL DESIGNER/CHECKER - Designed, redesigned and coordinated tooling projects, including design of fixtures, mechanisms and motion control systems used to manufacture Head Stack Assemblies.  Coordinated the fabrication and assembly of assigned tooling projects while maintaining tight schedules requirements.  Interacted within the tooling group to check and answer Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing problems.  Produced designs in compliance with ANSI Y14.5M-1982 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Used Unigraphics and AutoCAD CAD systems.  {July 1992-February 1995}

(Company) Boulder, CO

QUALITY ASSURANCE/MECHANICAL DESIGNER - Developed and implemented process specifications used in manufacturing and quality control environments. Devised and designed production tooling to facilitate engineering and quality requirements.  Interacted with vendors to insure quality requirements were understood and maintained.  Produced and maintained drawing documentation.  {May 1991-July 1992}

Ball Aerospace Systems Group

Communications Systems Division Boulder, CO

MECHANICAL DESIGNER/DRAFTER IV - Designed electromechanical and mechanical components from conceptual through to the manufacture phase.  Devised, designed and redesigned tooling associated with all levels of manufacturing and quality control.  All designs and documentation were produced in compliance with DOD-STD-100 and ANSI Y14.5M-1982 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.  {November 1986- May 1991}

Ball Aerospace Systems Division Boulder, CO

MECHANICAL ASSEMBLER/PROTOTYPE MACHINIST - Coordinated the manufacturing and assembly of cryogenic tanks.  Manufactured prototype components used in electromechanical hardware, mechanisms, test equipment and tooling in compliance with ANSI Y14.5M-1982 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and MIL-Specifications.  {July 1984-November 1986}
