Styrolux plastics grade now also for blow molding

Recent tests have demonstrated that Styrolux 3G46, a highly transparent SBC plastics grade from BASF, lends itself very well for blow molding.

The SBC (SBC: styrene butadiene block copolymer) plastics grade Styrolux* 3G46 in comparison to established transparent plastics materials used for this method such as PVC, PET G or PC, is 30 percent lighter in weight and easier to process by extrusion blow molding (EBM) as well as by injection blow molding (IBM). Thus, a wide array of different types of transparent hollow objects such as plastics storage containers or decorative vessels can be manufactured cost-effectively.

Transparent, lightweight and tough
Styrolux, a plastics that so far has been used primarily in extrusion and injection molding, can be processed on all customary blow molding systems. The processing temperatures are lower and the cycle times are shorter in comparison to the conventional materials.

This plastics material does not have to be pre-dried, thereby saving even more costs. Moreover, it has an interesting combination of mechanical and optical properties: High impact resistance and breaking strength, along with high transparency and exceptional gloss, makes this plastics a very economical alternative to create attractive bottles with integrated handles. The material can easily be dyed, printed, glued and welded. In addition to Styrolux 3G46, another suitable product for blow molding is Styrolux 684D. Within the Styrolux product range 3G46 and 684D are in particular suited for extrusion blow molding. Depending on the requirements for the end product, Styrolux offers the economic alternative for stylish conainers.

Results of recent tests confirmed the suitability of Styrolux 3G46 and Styrolux 684D, two of BASF’s SBC polymers, for blow molding. Shown in photo at right, transparent hollow objects such as storage containers and decorative vessels, sports drink bottles and dispensers can be manufactured cost-effectively.

Styrolux is produced through the copolymerization of styrene and butadiene and can be employed universally for injection molding, extrusion and thermoforming. Styrolux has the lower density typical of styrene plastics and combines this with the impact resistance required for most applications.

Plastics products made of Styrolux are transparent and impact resistant. Consequently, Styrolux lends itself for a wide variety of applications and for the manufacture of visually attractive products that have outstanding properties of use.

Under the brand name Styroclear, BASF offers a product that, like other SBC grades, combines very good transparency with toughness. It is particularly well-suited, for instance, for transparent plastics hangers for clothes.

  • Excellent transparency
  • Lighter part weight
  • Dimensionally stable and shatter impact resistant
  • High gloss

Recycling
Styrolux waste generated during processing such as, for example, edge strips or web scrap, can be returned to the process after a simple grinding step and thus re-utilized for the same application. Consequently, hardly any production waste is created that would then have to be disposed of properly.

When used articles such as, for instance, disposable packaging, are recycled, Styrolux styrene plastics can be admixed to the melt stream of polystyrene and it even improves the toughness of the recycled material.
