BASF broad portfolio of beer and wine solutions at WBC At the World Brewing Congress 2008 in Hawaii, BASF will present new filter aids and stabilizer products for the beer and wine industry.
BASF Corporation will showcase beer and wine filtration solutions that address a variety of treatment challenges at the World Brewing Congress (WBC), August 2-6, 2008, at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Visitors to BASF Booth 214 will have the opportunity to see the company’s broad portfolio of filter aids and stabilizers for beer and wine. BASF’s newest product, Crosspure* filter aid, is a polymer that is used for filtration and stabilization of beer in one step. Filtration clarifies the beer, removes microorganisms that can compromise its quality and provides physio-chemical stabilization. After maturing, beer contains not only yeast cells but also bacteria, protein-tannin complexes, and hops resins. Within a short time dissolved proteins and polyphenols form new visible protein-tannin complexes, which sometimes cloud the beer and degrade its taste. Crosspure filter aid removes tannins, flavanoids and haze forming polyphenols from beer without compromising the taste. Two separate mechanisms provide perfect clarity: physical processes remove particulate substances causing turbidity such as yeasts, bacteria and protein-tannin complexes, and dissolved tannins become adsorbed such as anthocyanogens and flavanoids. “Crosspure filter aid is a safe, reliable and regenerable filter aid/stabilizer. It provides an alternative to Kieselguhr, also called diatomaceous earth (DE), or membrane filtration with the added benefit of stabilizing the beer,” said Uwe Schnell, Manager, New Business Development, BASF Corporation. “Just like Divergan, Crosspure can be regenerated in a combined regeneration and filtration system – a closed system comprising a dosing vessel, a filter unit and a CIP system.” Unlike Kieselguhr and other single use stabilization aids, Crosspure is designed to be reused. Kieselguhr is a natural filtration aid that has been used for decades in the beer filtration process. Worldwide consumption of DE in the brewing industry is estimated to be 180,000 tons. Disposal costs for DE drive up filtration costs, so brewers are searching for more economic methods. Because Crosspure is reusable, the filtration cycle can be repeated over and over again, eliminating disposal costs and DE waste buildup. The product has the added benefit of not imparting iron into the finished beer. Since Crosspure is regenerable, it contributes to sustainability of the environment by eliminating worldwide waste of an estimated 180,000 tons from being disposed in the ground. BASF will also feature the Divergan* family of filter aids that help stabilize beer, wine and other beverages allowing them to stay fresh longer by removing phenols and avoiding premature turbidity. Divergan F filter aid is a single use PVPP that reduces haze-causing tannins and extends shelf life. Divergan RS provides all the benefits of Divergan F, plus it is a regenerable PVPP for cost savings. It provides the ideal chill-haze solution. * Trademarks of BASF.
