Plastics Behind Bars Diffuse covers for the vehicle ventilation system made of Ultradur S4090 GX high performance plastics in the latest Mercedes Benz C class.
The plastics cover at the top center and the two so-called diffuse fields located on the left and right in the dashboard of the latest Mercedes-Benz C-class models are made of Ultradur* S4090 GX black, a BASF PBT/ASA blend reinforced with 14% glass fibers. These three parts have a very filigree surface, namely, a rib-mesh metal imitation with open perforations. They function as covers for the diffuse ventilation of the front windshield and of the vehicle interior and are injection molded by REUM GmbH & Co. Betriebs KG, a company headquartered in Hardheim, Germany. The complex molds for serial production are built by REUM itself. Ultradur S4090 GX is highly dimensional stable under heat since it has to withstand the high temperatures to which dashboards are exposed. These high performance plastics, thermally conductive variants, are various flame-retardant versions and in the low-warpage form made of PBT/ASA. PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), (ASA) a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer.
The key to this innovation lies in the admixture of an additive of finely dispersed nanoparticles. These newer plastics, the Ultradur grades, are polyalkylene terephthalate molding compounds based on PBT, which has been rendered especially easy flowing by means of nanotechnology. The incorporation of special nanoparticles into these plastics accounts for a marked improvement of these products not only in terms of the flow properties but also of the heat-ageing resistance at high temperatures. As a plus for processors, owing to the lower melt viscosity, it is sufficient to use lower injection and holding pressures. During the injection molding process, the reduction in the melt temperature makes it possible to shorten the cooling time and thus the total cycle time for these specialty plastics. The low-viscosity Ultradur High Speed can flow into even finer molds, so that it can be employed to produce completely new components. The strength and rigidity of glass-fibre reinforced Ultradur grades are substantially higher than those of the unreinforced Ultradur grades.
