Plastics play functional role in automotive headrest Styrene plastics blend Terblend N from BASF used in the SkinForm two-component process for the first time in automotive headrests.
The SkinForm** process is being used for the first time for a serially produced part in automotive construction, namely, for the headrest of the latest Mercedes-Benz models of the C-, S-, M-, R- and GL- class. The thermoplastic support of the rear headrest cover is made of the styrene plastics Terblend* N NM-19, BASF’s ABS/PA blend, brought to you by BASF’s PlasticsPlus*, that covers a broad range of specialty plastics. The plastics material Terblend N is easy to process and adheres very well to polyurethane, whose soft outside exhibits a leather-like grain and feel. The functional plastics part of the headrest is manufactured by Schenk Plastic Solutions GmbH in Esslingen, Germany and has additional facilities in Bretten near Pforzheim and in Liberec, Czech Republic. With its Terblend N (ABS+PA), BASF offers a blend based on ABS and polyamide. It combines the good properties of the individual components and also reduces the disadvantages of PA, such as shrinkage and inadequate low-temperature impact strength.
First automotive application of the SkinForm process The SkinForm process was originally showcased at the K 2004 plastics trade fair by its developers, KraussMaffei Technologies GmbH, Ruhl Puromer and Schenk Plastic Solutions. This process cleverly combines reaction and injection molding techniques with each other, so that a single process step yields high-quality, leather-like plastics surfaces with a polyurethane outer skin and a mechanically sturdy, thermoplastic support. The plastics molded parts lend themselves particularly well not only for automotive construction, but also for office chairs as well as for articles of daily use such as vacuum cleaners, power tools and notebooks. Schenk Plastic Solutions, developing design concepts for intelligent and innovative solutions, focuses mainly on the automotive market and the market for technical parts. The Company designs and manufactures functional and trim parts as well as decorative accessories for vehicle interiors, in addition to plastics parts and assemblies for electric and motor driven machines. In November 2005 Argantis GmbH together with the management team acquired Schenk Plastic Solutions GmbH which employs approximately 450 personnel. Argantis focuses primarily on the acquisition of majority stakes involving transaction volumes from €30m upwards in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The Ruehl Group AG manufactures and distributes chemical products and operates in different markets with a wide variety of products and services. KraussMaffei Technologies GmbH has attained an outstanding position and
will profit from continued growth with its advanced machinery and systems
for processing a range of products made of plastics and rubber materials. See all the Press Releases from BASF sites - Click Here Read a recent article about - Got a Cool Job in Plastics?- Get the word out today! Our Dedicated Portal Helps U- $ave
