Every job seeker fears salary negotiations

Here are some tips in the hiring process regarding important salary negotiating skills to consider once you are getting interview requests from employers.

This week's tip is about salary negotiation. Negotiating skills are important, but they're what you use once you're getting interview requests from employers. If you don't have employers calling you yet, you should first work on generating leads.

We recommend getting your resume on all the job boards as a good first step in getting noticed. If you sign up for Resume Director, they will put your resume on over 90 job sites for you. Even if you want to post your resume on all the job boards yourself, you should check out the list of job boards under the "Sites We Post You To" option on the ResumeDirector home page just to be sure you have posted your resume on all the relevant sites. To get to the site, visit this address: http://www.jobwerx.com/resume_director.html

Another way to increase your lead flow is by sending your resume directly to recruiters. ResumeArrow lets you send your resume directly to thousands of recruiters in your industry and desired work locations. To find out more, visit this web address: http://www.resumearrow.com/def.php3?pc=13CS756

Every job seeker fears salary negotiations. They are secretly thinking “I hope I get a pay increase” but they don’t know how to navigate the process. Here are some tips to help you negotiate your salary successfully.

  • Visit salary.com and determine your market salary range
  • Decide how much you want to make, how much you need to make and how much you would be willing to accept
  • Never lie about your salary history
  • Don’t be the first to bring up salary during the interview
  • Get the offer in writing (Terms of Employment)

If you are asked your salary requirements early in the hiring process the company is using this question as a pre-screening tool. Be careful! If you answer too high you may disqualify yourself from the running and if you answer too low you may be depriving yourself of a much higher salary once hired.

Consider the following responses:

  • Negotiable
  • Depends on the benefits package
  • Share the salary range you have researched

Try the following approach:

"That's a great question that I will be able to answer later in the interview process once I know more about the position and its challenges, I should be able to accurately answer your question. Still, I have done research on my salary and overall compensation, so I'd be looking for a position within the $k-$k base salary range. Clearly, you will want to be confident that I'm the right person for this position, as well, before discussing salary and benefit information with me...am I correct in assuming that?"

Closing the Deal

Remember during salary negotiations to always bring the hiring manager back to your strengths. Remind them that you are the solution to their hiring dilemma. Only you have the experience, education, expertise and drive to perform beyond their expectations.

Terms of Employment

Always ask the employer for an offer in writing or Terms of Employment.

Ensure they include the following points:

  • Company
  • Title
  • Direct Report
  • Function(s) and/or responsibilities of the position
  • Compensation rate and payment method
  • Commission or Bonus Information
  • Start date
  • Benefits Information

In closing, this is your salary. Take the time to research a fair pay rate and negotiate your earnings.
