LANXESS rubber chemicals unit adds product line

Specialty chemicals group LANXESS launches new ultra high ACN Therban technical rubber products line, an ultimate solution for the oil industry and the latest generation of flex fuels.

The specialty chemicals group LANXESS AG, one of the world’s leading suppliers of technical rubber products, is adding three new ultra-high Therban (HNBR) product line grades, namely Therban AT A 5005 VP, Therban AT C 5065 VP and Therban A 5008 VP, to its Therban product line of high-performance hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR).

Dr. Matthias Soddemann, head of the LANXESS Center of Excellence Therban, explains: “With these new grades we are responding to a variety of customer requests for e.g. exceptional media resistance (which is achieved by a maximum ACN (acrylonitrile) content of up to 50.5 %), maximum aging resistance (achieved by full saturation of the polymer backbone) and excellent processing behavior thanks to LANXESS’s unique Therban AT technology.”

So far no fully saturated ultra-high ACN HNBR technical rubber product grades containing more than 44 % ACN have been available in the market place. Yet the combination of maximum ACN content and full saturation offers the highest possible resistance against aggressive media, such as the latest generations of flex fuels. Accordingly LANXESS has developed two fully saturated grades (< 0.9 % residual double bonds) in the shape of Therban A 5008 VP and Therban AT A 5005 VP.

“In other applications, such as stators for oil drills with their elongated geometries, outstanding flow characteristics are required as well as maximum media resistance. We have addressed this specific requirement by the use of LANXESS’s unique and patented low-viscosity Therban AT technology in the Therban AT A 5005 VP (fully saturated) and Therban AT C 5065 VP (partially saturated for optional sulfur cure) grades,” notes Dr. Martin Mezger, Senior Technical Specialist and a member of the Center of Excellence Therban.

With its new ultra-high ACN Therban grades, LANXESS offers a complete new set of unique tools while underscoring its commitment to continued research and development for the rubber industry.
