LANXESS chemicals presents pigments for coloring construction materials

The specialty chemicals group LANXESS AG is presenting its range of inorganic pigments for coloring construction materials at the 2008 BIBM Congress.

At the 2008 BIBM Congress in Vienna, Austria, from May 7 – 10, specialty chemicals leader LANXESS presents its high-grade pigments for coloring construction materials, and the presentation to include colored concrete for a better quality of life with a case studies report on worldwide reference projects.

The high-tinting-strength products of the Bayferrox* and Chrome Oxide Green lines impart attractive color to construction materials such as cast-in-place concrete, pre-cast concrete components and concrete roofing tiles and pavers. The lightfast and weather-stable products, available in powder, compact pigment and granule forms, are distinguished by their high quality and simple and environmentally compatible processing. In line with the theme of the congress, LANXESS specialty chemicals is thus also making an important contribution to sustainability. To round out its offering, the pigment manufacturer is sharing the stand at the 2008 BIBM Congress in Vienna with its sales partner, Harold Scholz & Co. GmbH, which is presenting its range of compatible metering systems, services and application consulting.

One focus of the trade show presentation will be the Colored Concrete Works initiative. This LANXESS initiative was established to link together a network of architects, builders, sales partners and concrete processors to better establish colored concrete as a versatile and elegant construction material. The initiative, which is dedicating to the long-term support of this trend, was presented to the public for the first time at the Bauma trade fair in Munich in April 2007. This is now being followed up by case studies to inform architects from around the world of particularly interesting reference projects. In these, builders and architects report on their experiences working with integrally-colored concrete.

Kicking off the series was the German architect Fritz Auer, who reported on his ESO Hotel in the Chilean Atacama Desert. He used Bayferrox iron oxide pigments from LANXESS to color the hotel’s exposed concrete in the reddish tones of a desert landscape. This example shows how the material properties and technical functionality of concrete can be combined with aesthetic design considerations.

The second case study covers the Arsta Bridge in Stockholm, over the Arstaviken River, at the main train station. The celebrated architect Norman Foster used the color Falun red – the traditional color of Swedish wooden houses – for the concrete to achieve a typically Swedish look Additional case studies are currently in planning.
