Streamlining of service areas linked to butyl rubber production

LANXESS launches efficiency program for Canadian site of Sarnia with a relocation of the technical rubber production to France and a reduction of around 270 positions.

In view of constantly rising energy and raw material costs, specialty chemicals group LANXESS AG is to launch an efficiency program for its Canadian site in Sarnia. LANXESS Inc., Sarnia site, is the headquarters for LANXESS in Canada, with both a major manufacturing operation and an R&D technology centre. Focused on the production of synthetic rubber, this facility is a major supplier to both domestic and international markets and employs 750 personnel.

The prime aim of this is to further streamline the service areas for butyl rubber production and to shut down the NBR plant. Some 270 positions will be lost in the process. Around one third of the jobs to be cut will result from the closure of a plant for the production of technical rubber (NBR). NBR production will be taken over by the French site of La Wantzenau. According to provisional calculations, the savings that will be reflected in earnings from 2009 will amount to a mid single-digit million figure. Already in 2008 it is expected that one-time costs of up to EUR 20 million will be realized.

"Because of the constantly rising energy and raw material costs in Canada, there is no alternative to this efficiency program," said Werner Breuers, a member of the LANXESS Board of Management. “As is customary at LANXESS, we will work with the employee representatives to try to find acceptable solutions for the employees affected."

To improve Sarnia's competitive position, LANXESS began work in 2006 on expanding its butyl rubber production. The second expansion stage is currently under way. Until 2010 LANXESS plans to increase its total worldwide butyl rubber capacity to 280,000 metric tons per year. LANXESS has so far invested around EUR 75 million in its worldwide butyl rubber production.

The plant for technical rubber production (NBR) was built in Sarnia over 60 years ago and will be closed in the second quarter of 2008. "Our modernized plant in La Wantzenau near Strasbourg is due to its scale in a position to take over the entire NBR production from Sarnia at much more competitive conditions, thanks to the work that has been carried out to realign the French site. The project was successfully concluded in 2006", explained Breuers. Customers in North America and Mexico will be supplied in future from the modern, highly competitive La Wantzenau site.

La Wantzenau is one of the LANXESS production site of synthetic rubber for the rubber processing industry. The products are used to produce functional components for the automotive, gas/oil exploration and production and mechanical, construction and cable engineering industries. They are also used as modifiers for plastics and as raw materials for adhesives. More than 320 LANXESS employees work at the French site.

In the first nine months of fiscal 2007, the Performance Polymers segment posted sales of EUR 1.996 billion.

LANXESS Butyl Rubber
Because of its unique characteristics butyl is a popular rubber, especially for tire inner tubes and tire inner liners, where its air impermeability is critical. The major application area for LANXESS butyl rubber is the tire industry, but its remarkable properties make it a key polymer for a variety of technical rubber applications. Butyl vulcanizates offer an attractive range of properties including low permeability, high damping, good reversion and chemical resistance, and excellent mechanical properties.
