Metalworking biz Sandvik Coromant reports fire in Prototype workshop No persons were injured at a fire in the Prototype workshop at Sandvik Coromant in Sandviken though the full extent of the damage is still difficult to estimate.
On the morning of Monday 25th February, a fire started in the Sandvik Coromant prototype workshop, Sandviken, Sweden. The fire was contained and no persons were reported injured. In the workshop there were advanced CNC machines and measuring equipment. Sandvik Coromant, a business segment of the Sandvik Group, manufactures cutting tools for the metalworking market. The activities on-site covered a number of customer orders for standard and special tools. It is hoped no customer will be affected by delivery problems as the manufacturing will be transferred to other units within Tooling Supply. The ongoing prototype operation will also be transferred to other units within Sandvik Coromant or Sandvik Tooling Supply and it is expected that there will be no disruption to the company’s new product introduction plans. The testing work which was located in another part of the workshop seems to have sustained no serious damage, although reserve locations have been preliminarily booked and can also be used if needed. A major cleaning operation has already begun, but it is not yet confirmed when workshop activities will re-start. All of the 90 affected employees have either been reassigned to different production locations or will assist in the clean-up operation. The costs for the damage will be fully covered by insurance.
