Plastics bottle performs vanishing act

The NoBottle from Sidel is a new generation, lightweight plastics bottle that is so light, it seems to disappear, highlighting the product within.

This innovation, aptly named NoBottle*, reaffirms Sidel’s commitment to creating an ethical market-wide solution to the challenges we face:

A rapid increase in the consumption of beverages in plastics bottles as world population continues to grow, people live longer, and their buying power increases, and as changes in consumer habits favor on-the-go, individual consumption resulting in an explosion of small bottles in the market,

Environmental consequences due to the nature of the plastics material (created from nonrenewable, petrochemical resources).

So Sidel created NoBottle, a new lightweight plastics bottle standard.

Until now, making a lighter plastics bottle involved adding ribs to give the bottle more strength. But the added stability made the bottle more brittle and less attractive. To create NoBottle, Sidel thought outside the box and developed its Flex* technology, combining:

  • The flexibility of PET (polyethylene terephthalate, the most widely used plastics to make bottles for beverages) to create a more elastic bottle that flexes instead of breaking,
  • PET shape memory so that the filled bottle springs back to its original shape even when squeezed and compressed during manufacturing or shipping,
  • Shape freedom: Flex offers a wide range of shapes and designs.

NoBottle currently presented by Sidel is just one of myriad design possibilities.

  • A 500 ml plastics bottle weighing 25 to 40 percent less (9.9 g instead of the standard 16 g) represents a significant weight reduction considering that 26.5 billion bottles of still water were produced in 2007 (source: Euromonitor). This source reduction means a potential savings of 160,000 tons of plastics per year worldwide!
  • 40% savings in container weight translates into energy savings for machines that handle several tons of bottles every day and for distribution networks that ship packages to their point of sale.
  • A captivating, innovative design proves that “green” can be beautiful as well as functional.
  • 500 ml still water is the most popular and fastest growing packaged beverage in the world (1.6 trillion liters of bottled water consumed in 2006 alone). By bringing NoBottle to market, Sidel enables maximum savings in the amounts of plastics used.

Sidel invents the plastic bottle in France in the early 60’s. Decades of innovation and acquisitions have made us a world leader in packaging solutions for beverages (water, soft drinks, beer, sports drinks, ready-to-drink teas, milk, etc.) and other liquid products (food, household, and personal care products).

We design production lines and equipment for plastics and glass bottles and metal cans. Our customers include well-known consumer product manufacturers including PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Danone, SABMiller, Anheuser-Busch, InBev, Nestlé, etc..

Decades of package design and development experience, coupled with PET processing expertise, also make Sidel a global leader in PET plastics bottle design.

When we set out to establish a new standard for eco-friendly PET bottles, we drew upon all of our combined expertise in bottle design, PET plastics processing, and equipment, and the NoBottle was born.
