Energy savings from infrared lamps on Sidel blow molding machines Sidel and Philips have teamed up to develop new infrared lamps for blow molding machine ovens for a 15 percent savings on electricity.
At Sidel, improving the energy efficiency of equipment extends to its installed base of machines. With 5,000 blow molding machines up and running worldwide, the potential for energy savings is significant. And thanks to new infrared oven lamps, electricity consumption can be slashed because lamps account for 90 to 95% of all electricity consumed on a blow molding machine. Philips developed new 1,700-watt lamps exclusively for Sidel that can be used in place of the conventional 2,000-watt lamps because of their improved light reflection. An opaque reflector actually increases the lamp’s radiance level, so that the new lamps cut electricity use in the oven by 15%. That improves the oven’s overall yield by 5% without affecting bottle quality. No modification of the existing oven or process is needed.
The 1,700-watt lamps have been patented by Philips and tested in a production
setting by the Société des Eaux minérales de Saint-Amand, a French mineral
water producer. Thus, Sidel can guarantee a quick return on investment
and reliable operation at full yield. These lamps will be made available
to customers in late June in Sidel’s spare parts catalogue. They will
initially be offered for Series1 machines and will ultimately be offered
