Insider News - January 29, 2005 - Jobwerx News - BASF
presents new cabinet, trim, furniture options to builders, architects.
Design MDF, introduced by BASF, is a through-colored Medium Density
Fiberboard technology, providing many creative possibilities for furniture,
cabinetry and more.
Design MDF is a highly colored composite panel that creates an innovative
look for composite wood products.
Builders and architects looking for a visually appealing alternative
to laminates and wood now have an exciting option: through-colored medium
density fiberboard (MDF) produced by manufacturers using BASF's Design-MDF
technology.
Examples of products created using Design-MDF materials were recently
on display at the 2005 International
Builders' Show, at the Orlando Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.
Through-colored MDF is an interesting choice for big-impact items such
as trim and moldings, cabinets, furniture, doors and distinctive panels
and partitions in home and commercial construction. For additional design
flexibility, panels produced using Design-MDF
technology can also be routed, shaped or cut out to reveal a contrasting
through-color that produces a distinctive, high-quality appearance sought
by many designers.
Unlike conventional MDF, this new approach requires no laminate overlay
and nicks can be buffed or sanded out. Coatings, such as high-performance
polyurethanes, can give the item a glossy, matte or dull finish as desired.
The unique appearance made possible by the Design-MDF process is complemented
by conventional engineering properties, which retain the moisture resistance,
strength and screw-holding abilities of standard MDF.
Use Design-MDF technology for furniture and displays has really created
a hugh impact in Europe and is expected to have similar effect in North
America. Wood product manufacturers including displays, furniture and
wood paneling as well as some craftspeople are showing strong interest
in this new and innovative wood product.
BASF's expertise in colorants and glues was used to develop unique pigment
preparations that uniformly mix with adhesives, penetrate wood fibers
and produce a high-quality appearance that lasts. Wood fibers remain
clearly visible, giving the boards a natural appearance.
Panels made using the Design-MDF system are available in shades of black,
blue, green, red, grey, brown, orange and yellow. Custom colors are
also available.
