ABB presents “performance in power” at Paris exhibition

INSIGHT

Paris, France

“Performance in Power by Industrial IT” is ABB’s theme at this week’s Cigré exhibition - a key event for the international power transmission industry. The Industrial IT-certified substations, shown in Paris, are built using ABB products bundled with the electronic information needed to operate them over their lifecycle. ABB will deliver the first Industrial IT-certified substation to a European utility operator later this year.

The display shows how core hardware components can benefit from Industrial IT, and focuses on a high-voltage switchgear (up to 170 kilovolts for air insulated substations), managed with an interface called the Operate IT Substation Portal.

The switchgear display is equipped with a new electronically controlled motor drive as operating mechanism, and a protection system connected by the new IEC 61 850 process bus, which allows open communication with protection systems of other suppliers.

It demonstrates ABB’s commitment to offer customers a portfolio of compatible technologies for power, automation and information; a robust, open architecture for integrated solutions; plus the domain expertise acquired through more than 100 years of meeting customer needs.

Industrial IT is ABB’s method of unifying industrial, utlity and business assets with the information technology (IT) required to integrate these components in real time.

Based on ABB’s Aspect Object™ technology, the Industrial IT-certified substation offers an interactive, electronic information system so operators can access instruction manuals, drawings, configuration tools, etc. for any device in a plant.

“Through an aggressive program of product enhancement, testing and certification, ABB is ensuring that every enterprise ‘building block’ is equipped with the integral tools necessary to install, operate, and maintain it efficiently,” said Peter Smits, head of ABB’s Power Technology Products division. “The customer value of this approach begins with the very first certified product, and will grow significantly as more Industrial IT enabled components are installed.”

Industrial IT in substations puts real-time management in the hands of operators and managers by integrating documentation and asset management information with other substation automation systems. Industrial IT can thus be used to track asset management variables like component usage, service history and equipment reliability.

Operate IT uses ABB's Aspect Object technology to manage all data required for the operation, supervision, optimization and maintenance of individual products or complete substations.

The browser-based user interface presents real-time process data and associated data from other sources in an integrated display. Electronic plant objects may be copied, pasted, and arranged to meet the needs of operations, maintenance, or management personnel. A simple mouse click on any “virtual” device brings up a menu of information and asset-management tools for the physical device.
