Houston, Texas--December 03, 2003-- A family of functionalized polyolefin products for specialty applications has been introduced by the Polyolefins and Elastomers Business Group of The Dow Chemical Co. Composed of ethylene ethyl acrylate copolymers, ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers, and maleic anhydride-grafted polymers, the family of "Amplify" Functional Polymers provides new or improved capabilities for the coatings, compounding, adhesives, and tie-layers markets, says Dow.

The company notes that more traditional polyolefin markets, such as those for tubing, molding, and films, will also benefit from this portfolio of functionalized polymers.

Because they can adhere to various substrates and offer outstanding flexibility, Amplify Functional Polymers can meet the processing and performance challenges presented by coil springs and other auto parts.

Dow reports that in thermoplastic powder coatings, the Amplify family provides good adhesion and flexibility to a variety of substrates, and adds that the polymers offer a desirable balance of cost efficiency and high performance. Amplify Functional Polymers are good alternatives for protective coatings applied as a dry powder for decorative and functional needs, according to Dow.

For the compounding market, the polymers reportedly afford opportunities for enhancements to impact modification, compatibilization, and modulus control. Typically used to modify impact and viscosity characteristics of engineered thermoplastics and polyolefins to meet end-use requirements in appliance and automotive applications, Amplify Functional Polymers are said to impart the flexibility, toughness, and durability required by products ranging from industrial hoses to automotive fascia.

The company's initial portfolio of Amplify Functional Polymers includes:

* Amplify EA Functional Polymers (100 Series), ethylene ethyl acrylate copolymers engineered for toughness and flexibility for use in polymer modification, adhesives, tie layers, compatibilizers, and binders. Said to be easy to process, they feature functional adhesion to various substrates including metal, polyolefins, cellulose, polyester, polycarbonate, polyvinylidiene chloride, glass, and foil.

* Amplify GR Functional Polymers (200 Series), described as maleic anhydride-grafted polymers that have excellent adhesion to nylon, EVOH, metal, polyolefins, cellulose, polyester, polycarbonate, glass, and foil. GR polymers reportedly provide compatibility with other polyolefins for polymer modification, compatibilizers, thermoplastic powder coatings, and textile binders. The company adds that they are ideal for use as adhesives and tie layers in traditional food packaging applications, pipe coatings, thermoplastic powder coatings, impact modification, modulus control, and glass-filled composites.

* Amplify VA Functional Polymers (400 Series), ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers intended for use in packaging and nontraditional polyolefin applications. Featuring functional adhesion to various substrates including polyolefins, cellulose, polyester, glass, and foil, they are engineered with toughness and flexibility for use in polymer modification, laminating adhesives, tie layers, compatibilizers, and binders.
