Pourable Tooling Material

Booth showcased Dura Tech, a pourable tooling material reported to outlast steel tooling in wear resistance. It is machine mixed and poured at a temperature of 250 deg F and requires proper curing. Tooling for pouring DuraTech has to be produced out of a heat-and- moisture resistanct material, and constructed for gravity pouring. It is is available in sheets of 12 ft^sup 2^ from 1/8 to 2 in. in thickness. It can be ordered in blocks, rods, or tubing in a standard hardness of D-70 Durometer.-Adolfs Pattern Shop

Induction Heating and Melting

Booth showcased company's advanced technologies that are used for the melting and holding of ferrous and nonferrous metals, heating for forging, steel mill processes, coating, and the heat treatment of steel. Green Sand Molding Materials

The Metalcasting Products Group of American Colloid Company showed attendees its quality green sand molding materials. For 75 years American Colloid Company has led the foundry industry in the development and usage of Bentonite. Technical and sales specialists were also on hand to discuss the merits of quality green sand for foundry applications.-American Colloid Co.,

 

Spectrometers

Angstrom Inc. exhibited its complete line of spectrometers for foundry metal analysis and control. Product demonstrations of the 950 Series laboratory spectrometer, 2500 Series desktop spectrometer, and 3000 Series portable spectrometer were the focal point of the booth. Information on Angstrom Spectrometer Upgrade Systems and Service Programs were also available.-- Angstrom Inc.

 

Vibrating Equipment

The 52-year-- old company displayed a furnace charge feeder for 10 metric ton, medium-frequency induction furnaces, flat deck shakeout for an automated molding line, and large no-bake mold shakeout with sand return conveyor and overhead magnet.-Carrier Vibrating Equipment Inc

 

Foundry Solutions

Ashland highlighted its partnership with Arena-Flow L.L.C. The two are working on modeling software to maximize the design of a core blowing machine and corebox. Ashland also is collaborating with Xsilogy Inc. on a software development of realtime, wireless, web- based monitoring of foundry process equpment that will integrate Xsilogy's SkyView online process monitoring navigation tool.- Ashland Specialty Chemical Co.,

 

Foundry Vibrators and Equipment

Cleveland Vibrator displayed a variety of its dependable products, such as shake out tables-up to 3,000-lb capacity for breaking up sand; grid tables that raise flasks off roller conveyor to vibrate & compact sand around patterns; and vibrators: styles and models for match plate, molding, shell core, & rollover machines. Hot Melt Hoists

David Round introduced its foundry line of hot melt hoists, tractor drives, free-wheeling tractor drives, jib drives, and die setter chain hoists. Foundry Ladies

Exhibit highlighted company's full range of standard and custom design ladles in sizes up to 30,000 lb. ME ladles incorporate design innvations such as double enveloping worm gears for greater strength, renewable trunnion-bearing wear surfaces that eliminate shaft scoring; and replaceable ladle bottoms on certain models for lower refractory cost and easier maintenance.-D&E Foundry Ladles

 

Conveying System

Booth highlighted how customers can lower their costs with the Full Line Concept conveying system. The system pneumatically conveys new sand, shakeout sand, coated sand, or molding sand gently at much lower conveying velocities and with significant reduction in product degradation and/or system wear. Each system is custom designed from one of 16 different conveying concepts-Dynamic Air

 

Rotary Processing Equipment

Didion featured its new generation of rotary processing equipment. The Mark 5 Series rotary media drum along with the rotary lump crusher/sand reclaimer was on display. The patented design of both machines guarantees increased productivity and profitability. Rotary sand screens, cooling drums, sprue mills, and rotary dross reclaimers were also displayed.-Didion International Inc.

Sand Preparation and Cooling

Eirich Machines Inc. provided live demonstrations of simultaneous sand preparation and cooling using the EVACTHERM process. Additional information on other product lines was also provided.-Eirich Machines Inc.

 

Molding Machines

The entire DISA group was represented with a FMC- 200-6A Filter, DISA 230X vertical molding machine, DISA MATCH 130 matchplate molding machine, DTC-2 batch or continuous feed 32 ft^sup 3^ shot blast machine, and the DISA DIETERT line of laboratory equipment. Booth highlighted systems and equipment designed by foundrymen, for foundrymen. Scrap and Charge Feeder System

General Kinematics offered an on-line exhibit with real-time reporting from the exhibit floor for those who could not be at CastExpo '02. The company displayed its Vibra-Sprout scrap and charge feeder system. It is designed to reduce spilling at the furnace crucible during scrap loading. The spring loaded design has an optional nosepiece with hinges and springs for fexibility during vibratory feed.-General Kinematics Corp.

Patternmaking Supplies

Repro NX, a new formulation of the company's most popular polyurethane, was introduced at the exhibit. Its nonsettling feature eliminates filler hardpacking. Shakers and mixers are no longer needed; simply stir with a paint paddles. Company also manufacutres and distributes supplies to build, repair, alter, and duplicate patterns, molds, models, and prototypes.-Freeman Manufacturing & Supply Co.

Core Binder Systems

HA International is the largest foundry supplier in North America providing binders s\ystems, resin coated sand, and refractory coatings. Technology is always advancing, and HA International is setting new standards with advanced products for the production of sand cores and molds. Low Pressure Permanent Mold Casting

Exhibit showcased company's new low pressure permanent mold production cell, which has two casting units, each with its own electrically heated holding furnace and controls. Air pressure (3 to 15 psi) applied to the sealed holding furnace forces molten aluminum through a fill tube extending from the bottom of the furnace into the mold.-Hayes Lemmerz Equipment & Engineering

 

Molding Equipment

Booth showcased the newest members of Hunter Automated Machinery Corp.'s proven matchplate molding equipment-the Series H HMP-20H and HMP-32Hcombine 15 enhancements with innovative design transformations to produce superior quality molds faster and more reliably, with less scrap. Hunter's revolutionary squeeze system imparts 142 psi on the mold surface or can be varied to specific mold hardness.-- Hunter Automated Machinery Corp.

 

Green Sand

Hill and Griffith introduced VEINAWAY(TM)-vein-reducing compound; SILKEASE(TM)-nonpetroleum and biodegradable mold release agents, and CARBONITE(TM) 2000-- low emission green sand carbon additive. Experts were on hand to discuss how these products can help metalcasters reduce emissions and assist in achieving the MACT standards.-The Hill and Griffith Co.

 

No Bake Technology

Specializing in no bake sand technology and equipment, IMF displayed a completely automatic mold closing system for large no bake molds. This machine has the capacity to automatically close flaskless molds measuring from a maximum dimension of 63X36/36 in. to a minimum dimension of 32X16/16 in. Also featured was an IMF T36/ 3 140 lb/min high-speed zero retention continuous mixer for a phenolic urethane or furan binder system.-IMF North America Inc.

 

Environmentally Friendly Binder

GMBOND(R) minimizes the foundry industry's effects on the environment and improves worker safety-all while reducing operating costs. Because it's water soluble, it simplifies core removal and allows sand and binder to be reused. It also provides significant worker health and environmental benefits-testing by the Casting Emission Reduction Program has shown that it can reduce emissions up to 89%for aluminum and 99% for iron castings.-Hormel Foods

Melting Solutions

Inductotherm based its display on the theme, "Complete Solutions for All Metals." Visitors were able to inspect melting, holding and pouring solutions designed for the complete range of metals, including gray and ductile iron, steel, copper and copperbased alloys, aluminum, precious metals, stainless steel, rare earths and reactive metals. An induction melting demonstration was conducted hourly.-Inductotherm Corp.

 

Italian Suppliers

The Italian Trade Commision had a pavillion which encompassed the leading Italian suppliers to the foundry industry. Companies in the pavillion included Borli Ipianti Srl, Fontec Srl, Foundry Automation Sas, Fritz Hansberg SpA, LM.F. Srl, IMR SpA, Magaldi Industrie Srl, ProgeltaSrl, and Space Srl.-Italian Trade Comision

 

Optical Emission Spectrometer

LECO exhibited its new GDS500A Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectrometer, among various analytical and metallographic products. Featuring a CCD-based detection system for the bulk analysis of metals, the GDS500A offers stability, precision, and accuracy, as well as simple, linear calibrations. Windows(R)-based operating software includes QC tools, user-defined routines, an on-board help manual, and access to LECO's exclusive SmartLine(R) service-modem support.-LECO Corp.

 

Automated No-Bake Molding Systems

Booth showcased a variety of equipment and systems for chemically bonded foundry processes. Among the equipment showcased was the "Slick" automated no-bake molding system, rollover draw, vibratory compaction, sand temperature control, mechanical reclamation, flow coat handler, computerized resin flow monitor system, and Versa Mull mixers.-Kloster Corp.

Automatic Grinding Unit

Booth unveiled company's new automatic grinding unit, that is available in five machine sizes. Programming of the unit is done offline in a CMM environment. The unit has shown that it can handle runs as small as 50 pieces cost effectively. Maus is represented in the U.S. by Laempe + Reich.-Maus

Cold Box Production System

Exhibit introduced Laempe +Reich's LL Series, a new cold box production system. The system can use existing cold box core tooling after a simple conversion. Other features include vertical and horizontal tooling for up to six parts, integrated hydraulics, and a completely enclosed production cabin for safety and emission control.-Laempe + Reich Corp.

Elevator Buckets

Maxi-Tuff AA style Dupont Zytel Nylon and 55 Durometer Urethane elevator buckets are incredibly lightweight and abrasion resistant. This results in clean and efficient handling of both sand and shot. A complete line of AA style ductile iron elevator buckets is in stock for immediate delivery. Digger buckets are also available which increase the life of elevator buckets while keeping overall weight down and increasing the life of more expensive elevator components.-May-Lift Inc.

 

Crucible Melting

Morganite's showroom offered a mini seminar to discuss the most cost-effective way to melt metal. Attendees also had the opportunity to see Morganite's patented Dual Energy furnace, a gas/electric hybrid combining the advantages of both furnace technologies. Automation Solutions

Rimrock featured its automation solution with a 405 Ladle and ABB 6400 Robots, including the new ABB7600 Robot with a handling capacity of up to 1,100 lb. The robots are exhibiting one of Rimrock's finishing solutions with grinding of a ductile iron pipe and a simulate process of sand core handling.-Rimrock Corp.

 

Casting Finishing Systems

Exhibit highlighted Mossner's automatic and semi-automatic casting finishing systems. The semi-automatic system features band or circular saws for casting cut-off. The automatic systems use circular or band sawing in addition to milling, drilling, and other machining functions. The automatic systems also feature robotic loading and unloading. Ductile Grade Pig Iron

The benefits of SORELMETAL(R), our high purity ductile grade pig iron, were featured and discussed by the company's technical service staff. ductile iron castings were on exhibit, along with technical literature about ductile iron production and metallurgy will be available. Continuous Belt Aerators

Exhibit highlighted benefits of Pekay's continuous belt aerators. The aerators are custom designed to handle any desired tonnage and are available in a wide variety of models.-Pekay Machine & Engineering Co. Inc.

 

Scrap Preheater

Exhibit showcased the Cyr preheater, which allows foundries to simultaneously build cold charges on a turntable, preheat, and deliver hot charges to the furnace. This hot charge reduces furnace melt time and improves the duty cycle of the entire melt shop. The preheater uses natural gas to uniformly preheat a furnace charge, therby reducing electrical power consumption. Drop-bottom and tilt- style bucket designs are available.-R.J. Cyr

 

Green Sand

Molding Machine

Roberts Sinto and SandMold Systems exhibited jointly. Visitors were able to examine the ACE, a Tight Flask green sand molding machine, as it made molds. Demonstrations of the FBO HIS with core setter, a Barinder automatic grinder, and an automated robot handling castings were given, too. Also on display was the RSR sand reclamation equipment, Cecon Controls equipment, and the MIE compactability and MIC moisture controllers. -Roberts Sinto and SandMold Systems

Foundry Material Handling Systems

Exhibit featured material handling systems that the company has installed and a video cassette provided sample clips of the equipment in operation. The company's new line of 400 and 500 Series equipment was introduced. These groupings of equipment designs were developed to meet the specific needs of ferrous and nonferrous systems. Gas and Electric Furnaces

Booth provided information on Schaefer furnaces' ability to deliver a continuous supply of quality, at-temperature, inclusion-- free molten aluminum for uniform solidification, which is critical to complex, high-precision castings. Schaefer's latest installation delivers more than 40,000 lb/hr in the automotive industry's largest lost foam aluminum casting facility. High Speed Continuous Mixer

Tinker Omega Mfg. LLC exhibited for the first time this year at CastExpo. On display was: The new TOM-250 high speed continuous mixer, the innovative Gamm 6 LL low level shakeout/reclamation system, VF-Series Volumetric Powder Feeds, and their PLC- basedpattern "Tagging System. Information on the balance of their no- bake molding, reclamation, cold box, shell core, shell molding, and material handling equipment was available.-Tinker Omega Manufacturing LLC

 

Air Pollution Control Systems

Schust Engineering specializes in design and turnkey installation of industrial ventilation and air pollution control systems. System designs includes dust collection, VOC control, and bulk dust handling to provide a single "source of responsibility" and "on- time results" to meet customers' manufacturing and environmental requirements.-Schust Engineering,

 

Al Melting and Holding Furnaces

Thermtronix Corporation exhibited the largest display in North America devoted entirely to aluminum melting and holding furnaces. Included in the exhibit was a full line of energy efficient, high performance crucible furnaces ranging in sizes from 300 through 3,000 lb electric, gas, stationary dip-out and hydraulic tilt models were displayed along with the Autoclean(TM) electric shuttle aluminum alloy rotary degassing system.-Thermtronix Corporation

 

Nonferrous

Foundry Bandsaw

Booth showcased the MBD Model 3620NFFS Nonferrous Foundry Bandsaw- a specially equipped version of ther industrial bandsaw designed to deliver the performance characteristics desired in a nonferrous foundry application. Machines features 36-in. machined and balanced cast aluminum wheels with "E-Z" change press on rubber and steel tires, 19-in. nominal underguide capacity, 36 ft X 37 in. tilting main table, and high speed roller blade guides.-Tyler Machinery Co. Cutoff Saw

Exhibit featured several new poducts including a Fox compliant cutoff saw for use with a robot. Also on display was a new casting qualification process, which involves a robot coupled with a vision system that locates the casting, analyzes the areas that require cleaning, and then cleans just those areas. System also qualifies the casting through vision gauging.-Vulcan Engineering Co.

 

Casting Simulation Software

Booth showcased Procast casting simulation software, which offers fully coupled thermal, fluid, stress, and solidification microstructure modeling. The software helps address such issues as hot tearing, hot cracking, distortion, die fatigue, residual stress, and shrinkage allowances. It can handle any combination of linear and nonlinear mechanical models.-UES Software

 

Blast Shot Technology

Vulkan presented Chronital stainless steel shot and Grittal, stainless steel grit. Chronital is used cleaning, deburring, descaling and surface finishing of a wide variety of aluminum, stainless steel, and other nonferrous alloy castings and forgings. Ferrous contamination is avoided with a single-step blast cleaning process and, in most cases, pickling can be eliminated.-- Vulkan Blast Shot Technology
