Ireland --September 12, 2003-- Clarehill Plastics Ltd. has locked up use of the powdery resin in rotational molding processes, and can work with Cyclics on further European development. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Rotomolded parts are made by putting resin in a large metal mold, melting the resin into a liquid, then spinning the mold rapidly. The molten plastic coats the walls of the mold but leaves the inside hollow -- good for creating large storage tanks and other vessels. Brian McCann, managing director of Clarehill, said Cyclics plastics have properties that make it competitive with other manufacturing techniques. "We have had tremendous success test-molding CBT resin, and are excited about the partnership we have established with Cyclics to commercialize this novel product," he said. Cyclics spokesman Timothy Ullman said the resin provides better chemical resistance and is a better vapor barrier than other plastics. The Schenectady-based company has started construction of its first factory, in Dresden, Germany, and expects to complete it next year. In the meantime, its resins are being produced by a company in North Carolina. Cyclics has won a contract from Dow Automotive under which the auto-parts giant will sell parts made of Cyclics' plastic, which is recyclable, to major automakers. Europe is expected to be a lucrative market because of regulations pushing recyclable car parts.
