INSIGHT Kuala Lumpur The trainers from the Selangor Human Resource Development Centre (SHRDC), will conduct training for the first batch of MIPTTC's trainees comprising technicans, engineers, plant supervisors and other skilled staff when the centre becomes operational in early February next year. MIPTTC is a joint initiative between the Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA), CESAP, the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE.IT) and SHRDC. The four parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) as a follow- up in the area of Italian technology and training recently. The MOU will facilitate the first of a series of technical collaborations of Italian technology. MPMA president Callum Chen said Italian-made machines have been recognised as among the best plastics machines in the world. The Italian plastics machinery industry occupies a leading position in world, in terms of production and export, he noted. "Each batch of training session will accommodate about 10 to 15 participants. "Preparation of syllabus has started and is expected to be completed by early 2003, while training is expected to commence early February 2003. "The machinery and auxiliary equipment for the training, which are on loan from CESAP, are expected to be delivered towards the last quarter of this year," he told Business Times. Under the MOU, CESAP, a company under the Italian Plastics and Rubber Processing Machinery and Mould manufacturers Association (Assocomaplast), will provide technical support to the research and development of new processing technologies and materials. MIPTTC's machinery and training facilities will be housed in a 4,000 sq ft building space at the Worldwide Business Park in Section 13, Shah Alam. "About 1,000 skilled or semi-skilled workers must be trained every year by the industrial training institutes to support the strong growth of the plastics industry. "Revolution in the plastics technology is so rapid that we could see new processing technologies and plastic materials being developed every year. "Our collaboration with Assocomaplast through CESAP to use the state-of- the-art machinery made in Italy is a wise move towards acquiring high technology through technology transfer programme," Chen said. The Malaysian plastics industry, which contracted 0.5 per cent last year, is expected to stage a strong recovery in the second half of 2002, buoyed by a rebound in the electrical and electronics sector. The plastics industry is forecast to grow 8 per cent this year, contributing 4 per cent or RM9 billion, to the gross domestic product from last year's RM8.4 billion. Established in 1967, MPMA is the official voice of the Malaysian plastics industry. It represents members and the industry in government interaction, spearheading the plastics industry's growth and providing the platform for training of members to upgrade their technological level.
