Zebulon, N.C.- Based Foam, Rubber Maker Set to Grow More

INSIGHT

YOUNGSVILLE, N.C

Less than a year after doubling the staff at its Tarboro plant, Nomaco is expanding again.

The Zebulon-based foam and rubber manufacturer is nearing completion of a $5 million, 75,000-square-foot addition to its facility in Youngsville. Nomaco is adding 100 employees there, bringing its total work force at its three plants -- in Zebulon, Tarboro and Youngsville -- to 600.

The growth is spurred in part by Nomaco's recent alliance with an Italian rubber manufacturing company and a former competitor, RBX Industries of Roanoke, Va., said Jack Pyritz Jr., Nomaco's chief operations officer for insulation.

Nomaco, RBX and Isolante K-Flex of Milan, Italy, will produce and sell rubber and polyethylene thermal insulation materials in tubular and sheet form. Such products are used to insulate items such as hot-water heaters and large pipes.

Pyritz said diversifying its product markets has also helped to sustain strong sales and revenue growth, which the privately held company declined to disclose.

"We are in 13 different industries," including home improvement and construction, product packaging, foam toys and the medical industry, Pyritz said. "There are lots of uses for our foam."

In January, Nomaco signed a deal with home improvement retailer Home Depot to sell plastic decorative interior products such as chair rails, casings and window accents produced by the company's subsidiary Focal Point Architectural Products, in combination with American Wood Mouldings.

Besides insulation and home improvement products, Nomaco makes the floatable foam Funnoodle and other toys for children, foam packaging and bedding, and kneeling pads.

And construction remains a major line of business, Pyritz said.

"A lot of our business is in construction. People are still building homes. It's not nearly as bad as people would believe based on the media."

If all goes as planned, Nomaco expects to do another round of hiring in the next two years.

"The growth of this company is amazing," Pyritz said. "We are very excited about this opportunity."
