Packing more efficiently

January 05, 2003 -- A ROBOTIC pick and place loader/unloader that 'reverses' the traditional concept of loading rigid or flexible packs into or out of shipping containers has been introduced by Goodman Packaging.

The company's Odyssey Robotic Loading System simplifies the operation by taking advantage of the time used during the motion of a two or three axes pick and place arm in the conventional method, in which the container remains stationary beneath it.

By moving the container into the correct position beneath the loading head while the product is being picked up, the loading head need only move down a single vertical axis to deposit the package into the pre-aligned case.

The company, represented in the UK and Ireland by Ultrapac, of Fleet, says that splitting the motions of the packer into independent multiple functions reduces complexity and cost; permits 50 pick and place strokes/minute; and provides a compact footprint.
