color effects for packaging, plastics, automobiles and consumer goods.

MOUNT OLIVE, N.J., April 07, 2004 -- BASF's Variocrom® Magic Red
K 4411 Color Variable PigmentTM is being used to provide a dazzling
red to gold visual "flip-flop" effect for Shiseido's new premium line
of skin care products named "Beauty Voltage."
"The dramatic visual effect of moving from a shining red to a brilliant
gold color creates an impressive look for Shiseido's new premium cosmetic
line," said Werner Peter, Business Director, BASF's Performance Chemicals
Group in North America. "The unique visual effect that the Variocrom Color
Variable Pigments create, provides an attractive, rich look that helps
make products stand out on the shelf. BASF is working with consumer goods,
packaging and automobile manufacturers to explore many options for creating
distinctive product appearances using the Variocrom pigments."
Packaging is a decisive success factor for cosmetic products. Together
with Shiseido and a packaging manufacturer, BASF developed the stunning
packaging concept. BASF's Variocrom Magic Red K 4411 met Shiseido's need
for unique color effects as well as high process stability required by
the packaging manufacturer. Whether made from polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene
terephthalate (PET), the spectacular packaging of the skin care line's
four different products catches the eye with a rich, unique look. "Beauty
Voltage" is exclusively sold in Japan.
Variocrom Color Variable Pigments are inorganic, multiply-coated, flake-like
pigments that, depending on the viewing angle, display various shades
of color. Combined with traditional chromatic pigments, they offer a broad
spectrum of color effects for packaging, plastics, automobiles and consumer
goods.
BASF's Performance Chemicals for Coatings, Plastics and Specialties product
range consists of pigments, preparations and dyes, binders, cross linkers
and additives. BASF is one of the world's three leading manufacturers
of these products, with production sites throughout the world. Further
