INSIGHT

TOKYO

Toyota Motor Corp. on Tuesday put on the domestic market the Voltz versatile utility vehicle it has developed jointly with General Motors Corp. (GM) of the United States, the automaker said.

The 1.8-liter Voltz is designed to "establish a new genre of vehicle that boasts SUV (sport-utility vehicle) flair, fun-to-drive attributes and station wagon-like utility," Toyota's Chief Engineer Takeshi Yoshida said.

In the joint effort to devise the new vehicle, both Toyota and GM contributed to the styling, while the biggest Japanese automaker was responsible for development.

The Voltz will be produced at New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., a Toyota-GM joint venture in California, and will be shipped to Japan.
