Web connections gaining speed in automation

A study from IMS Research Austin www.imsresearch.com) predicts strong growth for Web-enabled automation devices. According to the study, automation equipment that has a connection to the Web will inspire significant changes in how companies set up communication systems on the factory floor. Increasing use of Ethernet in controls provides the long-term impetus for Web-based functions. But gear such as intelligent gateways are expected to make web-based automation practical now in a variety of settings.

Says senior analyst Adrian Lloyd. "This market is no longer at an early innovation stage. Admittedly, main of the initial players in this market wer small companies, but recent products fromt Rockwell, HoneywelI, and Siemens show how the structure of the supplier base is changing." "At the end of 2000. only 15 suppliers offered Web- based equipment; by mid-2002 over 40 vendors introduced products of this type." he adds.
