Antifog Masterbatch for Plastics Films

Seattle, WA, USA--(Jobwerx News)--Ampacet introduces improved antifog additive masterbatch for polyethylene based plastics packaging food films.

Compared to standard antifogs, the new masterbatch acts faster and reduces water droplet formation to retain film clarity and thus package shelf appeal for fresh produce, refrigerated foods and hot, ready-to-eat meats.

Antifogs are added to the inner sealant layer of multilayer packaging films. They reduce film surface tension so water condenses as a thin, invisible layer rather than as spherical droplets that cause multiple light reflections and so reduce film transparency.

Evaluations show Ampacet 102163-U antifogging masterbatch improves film clarity versus standard antifogs. One set of tests involved cold-fog testing at 4°C on 1 mil LLDPE blown films containing 0.5 percent antifog. Films using Ampacet 102163-U remained completely transparent during the 50-day test. Similarly, hot fog tests found that films containing this masterbatch remained completely clear while water droplets formed after one hour on films containing two other antifogs.

"Ampacet 102163-U keeps products visible on retail shelves for extended periods," says Dr. Nilesh Savargaonkar, Physical Testing Lab Manager. "The proprietary surfactant we use comes to the surface in such sealant films as linear low density polyethylene or metallocene LLDPE almost immediately, while other antifogs can take as much as a day to do so. This is especially important for hot meats that go on display right after they are heated."

Ampacet 102163-U is approved for indirect food contact applications in the United States, Australia, the European Union and Japan. It is typically used at letdown ratios of 7 to 10 percent.
