Color Projection. Ampacet's 2007 color palette is intended

The palette contains 16 colors. The seven most influential of
these emerging worldwide are shown here. From left to right,
they are:

with a twist of classic red.

touches of blue.

· Sunkissed Orange, a relatively pure orange containing
strong gold values.

Ampacet, the leading supplier of color masterbatches for plastic packaging,
has unveiled its palette of 16 packaging colors for 2007. The palette
is intended to give those who package food, personal care, health and
beauty aids and other consumer goods guidance in creating compelling packaging
over the next two years.
The color palette is derived from broad research into color influences,
preferences and trends. "We monitor societal, political, economic and
other influences to create a palette that provides a fresh interpretation
of color categories in a changing world," says Linda Carroll, Market Development
Manager. "Our overriding goal is to help those who use our color masterbatches
to create aesthetically pleasing packaging that appeals to consumers and
moves our client's brands off the shelf."
According to Carroll, the biggest color story to come out of her research
is the strong emergence of orange across all geographic regions, which
has driven red into remission for 2007. "Orange is present in the 2007
palette in a range of values from high chroma to pale-blush peach. Purple
in all its variants is also coming front and center as a strong influence."
Ampacet Corporation is the world's largest volume global masterbatch supplier
and offers the broadest range of custom color, special effect, black,
white, and specialty additive masterbatches for extrusion, molding, and
a multitude of other processes and applications. Founded in 1937, it now
employs more than 1,400 people and has revenues exceeding $625 million.
Headquartered in Tarrytown, N.Y., Ampacet Corporation operates technical
and color development centers and manufacturing sites throughout the Americas,
Asia and Europe.
Research for the 2007 color palette involved four categories of influence,
i.e., cultural activities, consumer attitudes, geophysical and economic
transitions, and technological trends. "The overall global theme across
these categories is a growing individuation and a push for empowerment
among consumers. This manifests differently in each category, affecting
the palette in different ways."
Two microtrends impacting the cultural category are the increase in hybrid
households and the shifting of traditional roles within the family unit.
As a result, colors here tend to be non-gender specific and allow for
strong self-expression. One new color expressing this trend is the merging
of two traditionally independent colors, pink and orange, in what Ampacet
calls Cryptic Coral.
In looking at consumers, the company's research found various microtrends
that also reflect the themes of individuation and empowerment. One of
these involves a growing 'consumer democracy' in which people vote their
preferences and control the design of what they buy by expressing personal
specifications to producers. This is generating diverse niche markets.
Another is a quest for quieter, less-ostentatious luxury. According to
Carroll, these and other consumer-related microtrends yield colors that
express personalization and strength, such as an orange with strong gold
undertones called Sunkissed Orange in the palette.
"Continued shifts and upheavals in the geophysical and economic category
worldwide lead to preferences for colors that reflect both resilience
in the face of adversity and a reaching for stability and foundation.
One such color, which we've named Radiant Rouge, combines the grounded
qualities of brown with the energy and richness of red arising within
it.
"Colors in the technology sector mirror the demand for no-frills convenience
and functionality. They project an iconic presence in that they can serve
as personality extensions. Our research indicates they are trending toward
lighter and brighter values, such as a gleaming silver with a splash of
refractive light in a color we call Iced Graphite."
