Canadian firm looks to laser cutting for future growth

INSIGHT

Ontario, Canada

Looking ahead, Randy Wilson, president of John G. Wilson, Princeton, ON, decided that laser cutting technology would be important to the future of the company.

"We believed that laser cutting would be important to the future growth of the company," says Wilson.

As a result, the firm recently installed a BYSTAR 3015 4,000 watt laser cutting system including a BYCELL automated laser manufacturing cell and BYTRANS automatic sheet loading and unloading system.

Continues Wilson, "We spent the better part of two years researching various laser manufacturers before we decided on Bystronic."

The company, which began operations in 1953, has 110 employees at its 100,000 sq. ft. facility.

John G. Wilson is a production machining and fabricating company.

The firm does CNC machining, laser processing, metal fabrication, production welding and metal spinning.

The firm has a variety of customers in various markets. For example, some of the products that John G. Wilson builds include strapping dispensers for material handling applications; decks, stairs and other equipment for the commercial playground market; components for plastic injection molding machines; automotive parts; components for lift trucks and more.

"We also build components for a company which makes electric fireplaces. This is one of the important products that really thrust us into laser cutting.

"There are also other products that we are currently doing in more traditional ways such as turret work or on a punch press that we want to reengineer and take advantage of the laser technology," he says.

There were several features offered by the BYSTAR laser cutting system that caught Wilson's attention.

"We liked the access to the table that the BYSTAR provides. We also felt that the flying optics laser was the direction that we wanted to go.

"The BYSOFT software is also very user friendly and simple for training and teaching operators.

"We felt that that was a very crucial aspect of the purchasing decision as well," he says.

Typically, John G. Wilson is using the laser to cut material ranging from 22 ga up to 3/4 in.

The BYSTAR 3015, BYCELL and BYTRANS were supplied by Bystronics Inc., Hauppauge, NY. Telephone: (631) 231-1212.

The BYSTAR laser cutting system will play an important role in the future growth of John G. Wilson.
