INSIGHT Publication date: 2002-09-05 China sets sights on more robot manufacturing One of the four is the Shenyang Xinsong Robot Automatization Company which exhibited its robot products at the expo. Some of the products such as arc welding, spot welding, carrying, assembling robots and other robot systems are on the market. Li Qingjie, a senior engineer with the company, said Xinsong's sales volume has been expanding year-on-year since 1993 when the company took the lead in putting robot products onto China's market. Its robot sales totaled 100 million yuan in 2001 and topped 200 million yuan (24.09 million US dollars) in the first eight months this year. Xinsong's products account for one-third of China's robot market and have been exported to countries including the United States, the Republic of Korea and Russia. China began manufacturing independently-developed industrial robots in 1972. At present, China has more than 200 institutions involved in the research and development of robot products. However, since robot manufacturing started very late and developed slowly in the country, China has to import robot products to meet domestic demand. Some people suggest that the development of the robot industry be included in the Chinese government's major industrial policies. They would also like to see the government supporting robot enterprises readjust their industrial structure and product mix, thus propelling the industrialization of China's robot industry.
