INSIGHT Cleveland, Ohio, USA A copper-nickel-tin tooling alloy with 100 ksi yield strength, hardness of 30 HRC, and three times the thermal conductivity of conventional mold alloys has been announced by Brush Wellman Inc., Cleveland, Ohio. Called MoldMAX XL, the Cu9Ni-6Sn alloy is said to provide five to nine times the machinability of conventional tool steels. Productivity gains in excess of 20% are reportedly possible for very large scale molding, with reduced distortion of molded thermoplastics. Brush utilizes the patented EquaCast process to develop uniform composition and equiaxed microstructure, which is usually difficult to achieve in high freezing-range alloys. This process, a closed head casting technology, additionally deploys a proprietary feed system designed to vigorously inject liquid metal into the solidification sump, assuring uniformity of microstructure and even distribution of segregation-prone tin. Proprietary heat treatments in this cast spinodally hardened alloy system are patterned after most precipitation hardenable alloys. Standard hardness of HRC 30 matches P20, a standard tool steel in molds for injection molding of thermoplastics. The complex central core of a Chevrolet Venture's instrument panel is
produced by Textron Automotive with plastic injection mold tooling made
of MoldMAX XL copper-nickel-tin alloys. The alloys enabled substantial
improvement of thermal management, allowing cycle time to be reduced by
nearly one third, boosting productivity and lowering costs, while improving
quality. Did you find this material interesting? Do you want more information of this type? Comment via FEEDBACK
