INSIGHT New insert grades Kennametal offers two new steel-turning insert grades: KC9110, an ISO-class P10 grade for finishing operations, and KC9125, a P25-class grade for universal machining on all types of steel. A new coating-bond technology lets Kennametal apply three main layers and several sublayers of coating on the inserts with a total thickness of 18mu . These coatings are 25% to 75% thicker than conventional coated carbides. Insert cutting edges are microfinished to reduce surface roughness and expose A1203 layers. New grades machine 8620 and 1548 steels, ductile irons, 4340 heattreated forgings, M2 tool steel, and 52100 bearing steel. Kennametal Inc. Latrobe, Pa. www.kennametal.com Cobalt drills for stainless Thanks to a new flute profile and special point geometry, Titex VA INOX cobalt drills tackle stainless steels. Tool cutting edges, according to the manufacturer, have extremely high load-bearing capacity. In addition, the drills are made of M35 5% cobalt material, which gives them a combination of high-temperature strength and toughness. The tools also feature a Tinal Futura top coating for extra wear resistance. Titex Tools Inc. Greenfield, Mass. Punching line UItra XT tooling combines durability and interchangeability for highperformance and cost-effective punching. A main feature of the Ultra XT tooling is the quick adjustment of the punch length. With a push of the quick-length adjustment button, rotation of the punch head adjusts the length. Ultra XT tooling also has hardened and ground guides, which reduce the abrasive action of punching, and interior and exterior spiral grease grooves, which effectively diffuse heat. Ultra XT provides multipleangle settings and is available for all stations. The 1/2-in. A-station and 11/4-in. Bstation guides accept Ultra Tec- style stripper discs, which enable the addition of 0.118 in. in grind life on all punches. The 2-in. C, 31/2-in. D and 41/2-in. E- station guides accept original style OEM strippers. Mate Precision Tooling Anoka, Minn. www.matept.com Smooth coating DiaSmooth, a crystalline-diamond coating for cutting tools, has a nanograin diamondcrystal size of 0.02 to 0.1 mu. According to its manufacturer, this ultrafine grain provides a smoother surface than typical highly faceted diamond coatings for higher cutting speeds and longer tool life. The coating has a hardness rating of 10,000 Vickers, 2 x to 3 x harder than PVD-metallic and amorphous-carbon (diamond-like) coatings. Tools coated with DiaSmooth tackle hard abrasive materials such as high-silicon-content aluminum alloys, graphite, green ceramics, and composites. The process used at Diamond Tool Coating completely coats complex 3D shapes like the helical cutting edges of end mills and inserts with chipbreaker designs. Diamond Tool Coating North Tonawanda, N.Y. www.diamondtc.com PVD-coated milling and turning inserts SpectraTurn and SpectraMill are turning and milling inserts, respectively, that are PVD coated with TiAIN or AMN for edge strength and wear resistance. According to the manufacturer, TiAIN- coated insert grades are suited to dry milling and high-speed turning, while AlTiN-coated grades are ideal for milling titanium and titanium alloys. SpectraTurn TiAIN coatings are available in VC911, VC912, and VC919 grades that cover light, medium, and heavy-duty applications. SpectraMill inserts with the TiAIN coating come in VC91A, VC911, VC912, VC91B, VC919, VC91C, and VC91D-carbide grades.
