Seattle, WA, USA--(Jobwerx)--APRIL 9, 2005--According to DSM, their total number of accidents declined by more than 20 percent in 2004 compared with 2003. With regard to the environment, nine of the fourteen targets that were set for 2006 have already been met. The group’s financial results in 2004 were significantly better than in 2003, according to DSM’s Triple P (‘People, Planet, Profit’) Report for 2004 which was published earlier this week.

Improving energy efficiency, further reducing the environmental burden, reducing the number of accidents and improving profitability years will continue to be major priorities for DSM in the coming years.

Significant progress was made on all three dimensions of People, Planet and Profit in 2004. With regard to the environment (the ‘Planet’ dimension), nine of the fourteen targets that were set for 2006 have already been met. These targets effectively mean that emissions to water and air, land filling of waste and water consumption, measured by unit of product, must all be significantly lower than in 2000. A highlight of DSM’s performance on the ‘People’ dimension was the reduction of the number of accidents by more than 20 percent compared with 2003. The results on the ‘Profit’ dimension were also good, with net profit almost double the figure in 2003 at 262 million euro. Thanks to its Triple P record, in September 2004 DSM was included in the Global Dow Jones Sustainability Index, being rated the world’s most sustainable chemical company. DSM was also included in the FTSE4Good index (Global and Europe) in September 2004.

DSM sites are required to report not only accidents but also all environmental incidents and potential incidents, however minor. In 2004 the number of environmental incidents at DSM was down by thirty percent compared with 2003. The emissions of greenhouse gases and volatile organic substances remained stable, while emissions to water declined by around 8%.

In 2004 DSM produced a whistleblower procedure to allow employees to report abuses that they cannot or will not report through the regular channels. The procedure went into effect on 1 January 2005.

The complete highlights of DSM’s Triple P developments in 2004 are outlined on their website.

DSM recently announced the expansion in China with new facilities for Composite Resins and Engineering Plastics.

DSM Engineering Plastics will expand its high-performance engineering plastics compounding capacity, including new compounding lines, which will double total capacity for their polyesters. The existing facilities in Zhouzhuang in Jiangyin, Jiangsu province in China will be relocated to a new state of the art plant in Jiangyin Hitech Development Zone. Investment will total in the tens of millions USD with a start date sometime in 2006.

DSM Composite Resins AG will build a Sizing plant on one of DSM’s existing production sites. DSM Composite Resins AG is world market leader in Sizings & Binders and is entirely focused on serving the glass fiber market worldwide. DSM Composite Resins is anticipating market growth in this area. DSM plans to start up the new facility in the second half of 2006 with a capital budget estimated at around USD 7 m.

DSM's activities are grouped into three clusters:
Life Science Products, Performance Materials and Industrial Chemicals. DSM Nutritional Products will remain a seperate entity for the time being.

Life Science Products

The Life Science Products cluster’s activities are mainly targeted at the pharmaceutical, food and agrochemical industries.

Performance Materials

The Performance Materials cluster specializes in the manufacture of high-quality products tailored to meet customers’ performance criteria. The products are used in a wide variety of end-use markets, such as the automotive sector, the electrics & electronics industry, coatings and building construction. These markets are characterized by an ongoing drive towards new applications such as electronics in cars, plastic components replacing steel, electronic equipment for new infrastructures, eco-friendly coatings and personal-safety-enhancing products.

Industrial Chemicals

The industrial chemicals business includes fertilizers and acrylonitrile. The products of DSM Agro, our fertilizer company, are only sold in Northwestern Europe. DSM Energy participates in exploration and production activities in various oil and gas fields on the Dutch Continental Shelf.

DSM Nutritional Products

DSM Nutritional Products is a global supplier of vitamins, carotenoids (i.e. colorants and antioxidants) and other biochemicals and fine chemicals to the food, feed, health and cosmetics industries.

DSM has continued the Sight & Life program, which was established by the former Roche Vitamins & Fine Chemicals division (now DSM Nutritional Products). This humanitarian program is dedicated to providing technical assistance and training and teaching programs to educate local communities about vitamins. The project is targeted mainly at children in developing countries who face the risk of vitamin A deficiency. The organization also distributes free capsules of Vitamin A.

A notable professor of the Center for Sustainability at Nijenrode University (Netherlands) commented that DSM is at the forefront when it comes to developing innovation policies to support sustainable development. He reported that innovation is not just for the sake of innovation but is to safeguard the company’s flexibility and ability to meet the needs of future generations. In this way DSM has achieved an impressive transformation into one of the most modern industrial companies in the world.

DSM will publish its first quarter results on 27 April 2005.
