DSM Dyneema Superstrong
Polyethylene Industrial Fibers
Seattle, WA, USA--(Jobwerx News)--The next generation fabrics solution
of high performance polyethylene fibers used in industrial gloves, ballistic
armor and yachting ropes.
“Gloves that don’t feel like gloves.” With that tagline, DSM Dyneema
is introducing to North America what manufacturing personnel in Europe
already know: gloves made with Dyneema® give excellent protection yet
remain comfortable. Dyneema® is an ultra-tough, high performance polyethylene
(HPPE) fiber used in industrial gloves - as well as in ballistic armor,
yachting ropes, and many other demanding applications.
Dyneema® fibers offer extraordinary abrasion protection and cut resistance
in industrial protective gloves. Gloves made with Dyneema® remain more
comfortable to the hand than alternative materials, even when worn for
long periods of time. Additionally, because they wear longer than alternative
materials and can be washed multiple times without losing their comfort
or their strength, gloves made with Dyneema® offer cost efficiency.
“Gloves with Dyneema® are the next generation solution. They can be up
to 25 times more abrasion resistant than gloves made with aramids" explains
Marcel Willems, business manager, cut resistance for DSM Dyneema. Their
washability stems from their excellent chemical resistance. Gloves made
with Dyneema® offer comfort because they are flexible and thin, non-irritating,
and wick heat and moisture from the hand.
Beginning in Q3 of this year, DSM Dyneema will shift the introductory
initiative into high gear with a comprehensive marketing campaign to increase
awareness of the Dyneema® brand. Cooperating glove suppliers in North
America are key components of the initiative. "The elements that led to
our success in the European industrial glove market have been distilled
into a highly focused branding program," said Marcel Willems. A key element
of the program is the labeling of gloves made with Dyneema®, combined
with a stringent quality assurance program monitored by DSM Dyneema.
Labeling tells wearers their hands are protected by the world's strongest
fiber, in a product made under strict guidelines for proper performance,
wear and comfort.
Gloves made with Dyneema® fiber are widely used in Europe, where they
were first adopted in the mid-1990s by the European automotive industry.
There, they serve since many years to protect workers handling glass and
unfinished sheet metal and castings, as well as during assembly operations.
European automakers found in gloves made with Dyneema® a cost-effective
alternative to aramids, which was in short supply there.
Today cut resistant gloves made with Dyneema® can be found in Europe not
only in automotive, but also in the glass and paper industries, emergency
services, appliance manufacturing steel works and construction. DSM Dyneema
expects similar acceptance in corresponding North American industries
where comfort and long wear are a definite plus.
DSM Dyneema is the inventor and manufacturer of Dyneema®, the world’s
strongest fiber. Dyneema® is a superstrong polyethylene fiber that offers
maximum strength combined with minimum weight. It is up to 15 times stronger
than quality steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibers, both on
weight for weight basis. Dyneema® floats on water and is extremely durable
and resistant to moisture, UV light and chemicals. The applications are
therefore more or less unlimited. Dyneema® is an important component in
ropes, cables and nets in the fishing, shipping and offshore industries.
Dyneema® is also used in safety gloves for the metalworking industry and
in fine yarns for applications in sporting goods and the medical sector.
In addition, Dyneema® is also used in bullet resistant armor and clothing
for police and military personnel.
Dyneema® is produced in Heerlen (The Netherlands) and in Greenville, North
Carolina (U.S.A.).
DSM is active worldwide in life science products, performance materials
and industrial chemicals. The group develops, produces and markets innovative
products and services that are designed to raise the quality of life.
DSM’s products are used in a wide range of end-use markets and applications,
including human and animal nutrition and health, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals,
the automotive industry, coatings, the construction industry and the electrics
& electronics market.
