Plastics Have Sense of Smell

News Release - Extruded pebble with cellulosic plastic materials from Eastman encapsulates fragrances

Seattle, WA, USA--(Jobwerx)--APRIL 14, 2005--Designers attending Luxe Pack Brazil today in Sao Paulo are being treated to the country's first national plastic. Each attendee is receiving a custom extruded "pebble" sample of Eastman Chemical Company's Tenite cellulosic plastic. The pebbles are each made of two fitted halves, one of green and one of yellow – Brazil's national colors.

But what makes this latest addition to Eastman's Material Difference sampling program special, if not downright patriotic for Brazilians, is the plastic's distinctive scent. "It's an 'aromascape' based on the fragrance of the flora, fauna and water at the world's largest water falls, Brazil's Iguacu Falls, located on the border with Argentina and Paraguay," said Gaylon White, manager of design programs at Eastman. Created by international fragrance house Givaudan, the pebble's fragrance is called Brisa de Iguacu (Breeze of Iguacu.) Givaudan, which has a major presence in Brazil worked with Eastman and Linden, NJ-based Rotuba Extruders on the special edition pebble.

In February, Eastman introduced cellulosic materials that encapsulate fragrances, giving designers the opportunity to include the sense of smell into their work. Each pebble is made of two fitted halves, allowing a designer to mix the colors or share the sample with a client.

Eastman Chemical Company manufactures and markets chemicals, fibers and plastics worldwide. It provides key differentiated coatings, adhesives and specialty plastics products; is the world’s largest producer of PET polymers for packaging; and is a major supplier of cellulose acetate fibers.
