Crystal Clear Plastics Sofa Uses Spectar Copolyester

Designers Alejandro Castro, Rodrigo Barrondo and Pablo Igartua of the HASSA Company in Mexico have created a transparent sofa using Spectar copolyester from Eastman Chemical Company. HASSA chose Spectar copolyester because it can be water-clear, easy to mold, bend and drill, yet strong enough to support the weight of people enjoying the furniture's innovative design.

Spectar extrudes into plastics sheet that is crystal clear, tough, chemically resistant, odor-free, versatile, easy to work with, and affordable. Spectar accepts screen-printing, painting, and hot-stamping.

Spectar's ease of fabrication allows for versatility in design. Spectar can be laser cut, routed, welded, drilled, die-punched, bent hot or cold, or joined by screws, rivets, or bolts. It can also be cut on conventional table, band, or radial-arm saws with blades commonly used for plastic. Spectar can be vacuum-formed at low temperatures without predrying the sheet and can be polished using commercial edge-finishing equipment, sanding, solvents, flame-polishing, or buffing. Surface scratches can be removed using a common heat gun.

Spectar CLEAR is a copolyester, developed by Eastman to achieve measurably improved sheet clarity and edge color while maintaining the performance characteristics for which SPECTAR copolyester has become known in the industry. It offers the thermoformability and ease of fabrication of Spectar copolyester along with significantly improved clarity. Spectar CLEAR also offers approximately double the notch impact strength, 50% higher instrumented impact strength and better chemical resistance when compared to traditional Spectar Copolyester.
