Chippewa Falls, WI/August 12, 2003/Extrusion Dies Industries introduced an array of new developments at NPE 2003. Contour Die provides a combination of streamlined flow, short residence time, fast purges, and rapid achievement of target gauge, reports the company. The UltraSplit System eliminates the need to take the die offline to split and clean it, and the UltraLip Scraper traverses the width of a die in less than a minute to clear away buildup from the lips.

Cut-away section of computer drawing of the Autoflex VI-L die shows new thermomechanical actuation for adjusting the flexible lip of the die.

The Autoflex VI-L System, highlighted at the company's exhibit, is a new generation of the Autoflex computerized gauge profiling system for flat-die extrusion. It employs a thermomechanical mode of operation that the company says doubles the responsiveness of the flexible lip used to adjust product thickness, enabling manufacturers of sheet, film, and coating to increase productivity, reduce scrap, and conserve resin.

Representing a 50% increase in maximum lip opening compared with the system's successor, the Autoflex VI-R System, the Autoflex VI-L offers the benefits of automated gauge control to manufacturers of thermoformed packaging and containers, thin-gauge glazing, and other light sheet up to 0.150 inch (3.8 mm) thick. The system also reportedly doubles the speed of flexible-lip adjustment, enabling producers of film and coating to reach target gauge sooner and without operator intervention.
