Gizmo delivers
medical records News Release June 10, 2003 / Massachusetts: Children's Hospital Boston
is using a high-tech robot guided by sensors and a wireless communication
system to deliver medical records, the Boston Globe reports.
Made by Basking Ridge, N.J.-based Cardinal Health, the machine features a fingerprint access system, which allows designated individuals to obtain the confidential information by pressing their fingers on the robot's back. The five-foot-tall, 600-pound Gizmo, which several years ago replaced the hospital's trolley delivery system for medical records, navigates the hospital with the help of a map built into its memory and transports up to 50 charts at a time to as many as 20 hospital stations. Eventually, Gizmo will be used to carry medications. Officials estimate that the robot saves at least an hour-and-a-half of staff time per day
