Microwave Packaging Technology Ideal for Convenience Foods

Seattle, WA, USA -- (Jobwerx News) -- Pouch from Graphic Packaging literally will change the way Americans use their microwaves.

Consumers appreciate the reduced cook times and quick reheat features of microwave ovens, but many dream of microwaves that brown or crisp foods -- and a broader variety of microwavable products. Thanks to a new packaging technology developed by Graphic Packaging International (NYSE: GPK), (GPI) of Marietta, Georgia for Sepp's Gourmet Foods of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, that dream has become a reality.

The packaging -- called Quilt Wave™ -- has been awarded the prestigious "Best of the Best" DuPont Award for Innovative Packaging. This marks the second time the package has been recognized for its technical advancement, with a previous "Best in Class" win. The DuPont Award was presented on Friday, August 5 at the annual DuPont Awards Gala at the Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel in Philadelphia.

Quilt Wave is comprised of laminated cells, or "quilts," which are designed to expand when exposed to microwave energy. Upon expansion, these quilts come into contact with the food product. This hot surface, immediately next to the food, does double duty: it drives away moisture and creates both maximum browning and crisping.

"We were looking for a way that's both effective and practical to re-heat and crisp our frozen grilled sandwich products," explains Carl Tillberg, president of the bakery division at Sepp's Gourmet Foods. "After just three months of collaboration with the research and development engineers at Graphic Packaging, we had our answer, a Quilt Wave pouch."

Says John McDonnell, Marketing Manager at Graphic Packaging International, "We're excited about the response we've seen from consumers and retailers. The Quilt Wave package is ideal for convenience foods, which are a staple of our 'on the go' society. We're literally changing the way Americans use their microwaves -- and in the process, we're expanding the opportunities for microwave foods."

Sepp's Gourmet Foods distributes specialty products to grocery, retail, and food service customers in North America, Asia, Venezuela, and Iceland. The company -- based in Surrey, British Columbia -- is publicly-traded and has annual sales of approximately $45 million.

Graphic Packaging International is a leading provider of paperboard packaging solutions to the beverage, food and other consumer product industries. The Company operates 4 paper mills, 26 converting facilities and 4 machinery manufacturing facilities worldwide, with more than 35 locations and 8,300 employees in the Americas, Europe, and Asia Pacific.
