Chemicals company LANXESS AG sees Japan as a cornerstone of its business in the Asia-Pacific region. "We’ve had close ties with the Japanese market since 1886," commented LANXESS CEO Dr. Axel C. Heitmann during a visit to Tokyo to mark "Germany Year in Japan". "Since then, Japan has become our biggest market in Asia in terms of sales. Business in Japan in the first half of 2005 was very satisfactory," he added.

Japan accounted for 25 percent of Germany’s chemical exports to Asia in the first half of 2005, making it currently the largest purchaser of German chemical products in the region. In the period 2001 to 2004, such products accounted for some 20 percent of all German exports to Japan, putting chemicals in third place ahead of the machinery sector.

LANXESS is among the leading suppliers of rubber products in Japan, providing more than one third of the raw materials required for tire manufacturing. The company is represented in Japan by 16 of its 17 business units and employs about 110 people there. In 2004 LANXESS had sales of EUR 200 million in Japan, which was about 20 percent of its business in Asia-Pacific. Its largest business units in Japan in terms of sales are Butyl Rubber, Basic Chemicals and Functional Chemicals.
