Leftover PVC plastic pipe can make great organizer for your small tools

INSIGHT

CHICAGO, ILL - USA

Many times, when working with PVC plastic pipe, you will end up with scraps. These scraps can be used for lots of things. One clever use is as a small-tool organizer.

Use a length of pipe at least 12 inches long. Clamp the pipe down so you can drill some holes in it. Make the holes large enough for the shaft of a screwdriver to fit through. Drill the holes about 11/ 2 inches apart.

Unclamp the pipe, turn it a quarter turn and clamp it back down. Now drill a hole near each end to attach the pipe to the wall. If the pipe section is long, you might want to drill another hole through the middle. Fit a screw or bolt, depending on how you plan to mount the pipe to the wall, and attach the pipe to your pegboard, shop or garage wall. Make sure you use a screw long enough to go all the way through the pipe and into the wall. Now you will have a super place to stick your screwdrivers and other small tools.

DEAR AL & KELLY: We all got together and painted my mom's kitchen last week. We only had one paint tray, but we were using different paints. To cut down on all the cleaning, we used plastic bags as liners instead of using an unlined paint tray. The plastic bags were free and recycled, and there were plenty of them. Obviously, cleanup was a cinch, too.

A SUPER HINT: Tired of constantly straightening pictures on the wall? Install a small scrap of foam insulation on the back in the bottom corners. These will help the frame from wandering so often.

DEAR AL: You guys have joked about using a credit card to remove paint and strippers from wood without damaging or gouging the softened wood. I didn't want to risk messing up a credit card, so I tried a plastic spatula from the kitchen. It worked great, and the handle made it even easier to use. Of course, I had to replace it with a new one for the kitchen, but it was worth it. It worked really well.

Q. I have teen-agers who use hair spray. This thick stuff has created quite a buildup on the painted walls of the bathroom. What can I use to remove it?

A. Since hair spray will shampoo out of your hair, I would guess that any all-purpose cleaner, such as Fantastic or 409, would remove it and would not harm most painted walls.

DEAR KELLY: My attic is a great storage place for my winter clothes and lots of other things. I put a plain plywood floor down to stand on and to stack the boxes on. There was already a light up there, but it was just a plain socket with a single light bulb in it. I was afraid the bulb would go out while I was up there, so I installed a double socket. It screws into the single socket in place of the single bulb. With this, you will have two light bulbs. Even if one burns out--and one always does--I'll still have the other for a backup.
