September 20, 2003-- Fasteners - Structural plastic adhesives
Scotch-Weld DP-8010 and DP-8010NS are two-part acrylic-based structural plastic adhesive (10:1 ratio by volume) that reportedly can replace screws, rivets, plastic welding, and two-step processes including chemical etchants, priming, or surface treatments. The adhesives are also suitable for bonding LSE materials. They offer quick handling strength for applications needing fast assembly. DP- 8010NS is a nonsag adhesive for applications that need high viscosity, such as bonding vertical surfaces. Both adhesives, like the company's Duo-Pak acrylic, epoxy, and urethane adhesive products, are applied with the EPX Plus II Application System, ensuring proper mix ratios and thorough mixing. They are also available in bulk containers for use with appropriate meter-mix equipment. The adhesives can bond dissimilar substrates and structurally bond polyolefins. They cure at room temperature and offer good water and humidity resistance. 3M Industrial Adhesives & Tapes Div., 3M Center, Bldg. 220-5E, St. Paul, MN 55144, (800) 567-1639, ext. 5013, www.3m.com/adhesives Fast-curing epoxy adhesive A new two-component flexible epoxy resin system has a 1:1 mix ratio, weight, or volume. EP51FL cures rapidly at room temperature and sets up in 30 to 40 min. Cure speeds can be accelerated using heat. The system is 100% reactive and emits no solvents or volatiles during cure. It is claimed to have excellent bond strength to many different substrates including metals, glass, ceramics, wood, various rubbers, and most plastics. The cured compound has a high peel strength of more than 25 pli and an elongation of > 125%. It is said to have excellent electrical-insulation properties and resistance to many chemicals. It also withstands thermal and mechanical shocks. EP51FL has a service operating temperature range of 4[degrees]K to 250[degrees]F, and is recommended for use in cryogenic applications. It has a Shore D hardness of 12 to 15 and Shore A hardness of 55 to 60, and tensile strength of 1,150 psi. The system has a mixed viscosity of 70,000 to 80,000 cps and is easy to apply. A paste version called EP51FLND is also available for nondrip applications. EP51FL is available in pint, quart, gallon, and 5-gallon kits. It also comes in syringe and gun applicators. Master Bond Inc., 154 Hobart St., Hackensack, NJ 07601, (201) 343- 8983, ww.masterbond.com COILED SPRING PINS New Double Reduced End Coiled Spring Pins are symmetrical pins with reduced diameters at each end. This eliminates the need for orientation in the assembly process. The pins are suitable for temporary alignment of two mating components. They are available in high-carbon steel SAE 1070-1095/CS-70, chrome stainless-steel SAE 51420, nickel stainless-steel SAE 30302/30304, and alloy steel SAE 6150H, with special materials available by request. Like regular coiled pins, these components can be installed using a hammer, simple arbor press, or other standard pin-insertion equipment. Spirol International Corp., 30 Rock Ave., Danielson, CT 06239, (860) 774-8571, www.spirol.com Threaded inserts for blind attachment SpinTite blind threaded inserts are used when only one side of a workpiece is available for fastener installation and final component assembly. The aluminum, brass, steel, and stainless-steel threaded inserts are an alternative to tapped holes, weld nuts, rivets, and self-drilling or tapping screws. They work in panels as thin as 0.020 in., and without any additional hardware beyond a mating screw for final component assembly. The inserts install permanently using a handheld portable tool. Types include half-hex shank low-profile head, rib wall minimized-profile head, rib wall low-profile head, thin wall low-profile head, and swaging low-profile head. They come in unified and metric thread sizes ranging from #6-32 to 1/2 to 16 in. and M4 through M10. The fasteners are used in aircraft seat trays and automobile mirrors, electronics-cabinetry hardware and appliance hinges, and closed-structure materials with minimum backside clearance such as hydroformed tubig.
