Wide-View-Angle Birefringent Film for LCD related products.
The basic structure of a typical LCD device is such that a polarizing
film and an optical compensation film (birefringent film) are located
on the backlight side as well as the viewing side of the liquid crystal
cells. In order to obtain vivid image characteristics of display, it is
necessary to have a better contrast between black and white and to raise
color reproducibility.
Conventional LCDs, however, were marked by a phenomenon such that a whitish
display image appears when the screen is viewed from an oblique angle.
In addition, when the display in black color is viewed obliquely, the
image is seen to be colored blue or yellow, so that the viewing angle
becomes necessarily narrow. In order to resolve such a shortcoming and
to raise the display quality in terms of contrast and vividness of the
colors, it became important to introduce optical compensation. Such an
optical compensation is now successfully secured in LCDs by using the
birefringent film which is the subject of the award-winning invention
this time. The characteristic of the invention is such that the refractive
index of the film is controlled three-dimensionally with high precision,
leading to the elimination of such shortcoming in the conventional LCDs.
Nitto Denko’s wide-view-angle birefringent film has now become an indispensable
LCD material, finding use in a broad range of applications such as personal
computer monitors, cellular phones and TVs. The demand for this film is
expected to continue expanding in step with a further development expected
for the global LCD market from now on.
