INSIGHT Niwot, Colo., USA XpectrA Corp., which came to the area in the mid-1980s and specializes in plastic injection molding, bought sites in Tijuana, Mexico, and Juarez, Mexico, from Illinois-based Mulay Plastics Inc. for an undisclosed sum. Xpectra molds hard plastic parts for a variety of devices, such as television sets, computer printers and data storage units. The privately held company won't disclose revenue figures or its client base. But with Monday's news, as well as anticipated growth with customers home and abroad, the company expects its revenues during the next year will exceed $60 million, said John Conley, Xpectra's vice president of business development. The acquisition, as well as anticipated growth with customers home and abroad, will drive that expansion, he said, noting $140 billion worth of plastics were purchased last year. "As a result of this combination we expect to see significant growth over the next several years," Conley said. Xpectra acquired a 110,000-square-foot plant in Tijuana and a 105,000-square-foot plant in Juarez from Mulay. All told, Xpectra now owns 420,000 square feet of operations boasting 104 injection molding presses. Its Niwot facility mainly serves local technology and medical companies. A Tijuana plant purchased last year handles mostly consumer electronics, and the two newcomers will mostly do the same, Conley said. Xpectra now employs more than 1,200 people worldwide, including about 35 in Niwot.
