Traveling Exhibit Teaches
Students The Chemistry Of Plastics
Seattle, WA, USA--(Jobwerx News)--Science on wheels van exposes local
students to a hands-on experience in the chemistry of plastics.
More than 600 local students were provided with a "hands-on" experience
in the chemistry of plastics when the “PlastiVan,” rolled into town for
a three-day visit to the Sci-Port Discovery Center. The visit was sponsored
by a "Helping Make Communities Better" grant from BASF.
The PlastiVan is one of three “science on wheels” vans that travel throughout
the United States teaching students, educators and the public about the
chemistry, history, manufacturing and environmental issues involved with
making plastics. The program is provided through the National Plastics
Center & Museum in Leominster, Mass.
“The ‘PlastiVan’ program is an outstanding educational tool,” said Dan
Leal, Manager of BASF's Shreveport, LA site. “It demonstrates, in a unique
and creative way, the important role plastics play in our world. We are
proud to sponsor these visits because they make students aware of how
the products made by companies in our area are an essential part of their
daily lives.”
During the lab sessions, students from University, Waller, West Shreveport,
and Carrie Martin elementary schools and Plain Dealing Middle School participated
in experiments that included "The Chemistry of the Disposable Diaper,"
making "slime" using liquid polymers and a laundry detergent, and - to
demonstrate the flexibility of polymers - sticking a wooden skewer through
a balloon without bursting it.
“Students may be aware of the plastics they see in grocery bags, but
may never have considered that there’s plastic in lifesaving medical equipment
for example,” said Marjorie Weiner, National Outreach Director of the
National Plastics Center & Museum. “The first-hand observation and interaction
leaves a lasting impression with students.”
Sci-Port Discovery Center is a 67,000 square-foot science and entertainment
center in Shreveport-Bossier, featuring over 200 “hands-on” science exhibits
and programs, an IMAX Dome Theatre, demonstration theater, gift shop and
café.
BASF’s Shreveport facility manufactures and packages a range of pharmaceutical
products. With about 200 full-time employees, the site is a leading manufacturer
of prescription-strength ibuprofen. The site is located on more than 40
acres along I-49 in Shreveport.
BASF is the world’s leading chemical company with a portfolio ranging
from chemicals, plastics, performance products, agricultural products
and fine chemicals to crude oil and natural gas.
