Schneider Electric enters into a cooperation with ELAU AG

Rueil-Malmaison, France, and Marktheidenfeld, Germany, 23 March 2004 -- Schneider Electric and ELAU AG announce today a close cooperation in the automation of packaging machines.

To formalize this strategic partnership, a shareholder agreement has been concluded in which Schneider Electric acquires a 46.5% stake in ELAU AG Germany. Both partners aim to meet the requirements of the leading global players in the consumer goods industries. Using Schneider Electric’s worldwide network to support ELAU technology, the partnership will offer ELAU customers a superior product and service portfolio.

This equity position responds to three key aspects of Schneider Electric’s strategy:

* The acceleration of growth in the packaging machinery OEM market
* The widening of its offer in the motion control field
* The enhancement of its presence in the German industrial automation market
