Surfware is pleased to announce the recent grant of 40 licenses of
SURFCAM software to the Shanghai University of Engineering Sciences
(SUES) in Shanghai, China. The University, composed of 14 colleges and
5 educational centers, is home to nearly 8,000 students and 1,236 teachers.
The University has 45 different schools of education, including the
School of Material Engineering, the School of Automobile Engineering,
the Detection and Testing Center for Automobiles, the Center for Industrial
Training, and the Computer Center.
The SURFCAM software grant marked a significant milestone in both Surfware’s
and the University’s history. Though having a strong educational commitment
in the United States, Europe and much of the Pacific Rim, Surfware has
never issued an educational grant to a University in China. The grant
was extremely important to the school as well because it represented
the first CAM software donation of its kind.
Brian Kindilien, Surfware Vice President of Sales, and Dr. Wang Hong,
Ph.D., President of SUES, met to discuss the importance of the grant
to both Surfware and Shanghai University. Both acknowledged that SURFCAM
was a practical application that would help the students of Shanghai
University become much more valuable to the employers they would eventually
work for. They also agreed that the information generated from engineering
students using the product would greatly benefit the company in its
efforts to create broader applications for the software.

given a tour of the SUES’s facilities. Aside from Dr. Hong, the Surfware
team met with Mr. Zihe Cen, Vice President of the University, Hao Jian
Ping, Vice Professor, and Li Peiyao, Associate Professor of the School
of Material Engineering and many others. Following the facility tour,
the team assembled in the school’s auditorium for a very special ceremony
to mark the historic occasion. Surfware was presented with a crystal/gold
key to Shanghai University, a very special gift representing the school’s
connection to the past, present and future of the City of Shanghai.
In attendance were SUES students, faculty and administrators. Dr. Hong,
Mr. Kindilien, and Mr. Kevin Jiang, Gallop Engineering General Manager,
all provided brief speeches indicating their commitment to work together
to make the SURFCAM installation and support successful, and to continue
to work together into the future.
After the formal signing ceremony Darrin Bryant, Surfware Applications
Engineer, provided the students and faculty with a SURFCAM product demonstration
highlighting some of the important advantages of SURFCAM to the school.
This was followed by a brief question and answer session with students
of the Material Engineering college. The students were allowed to ask
any questions they Mr. Darrin Bryant receives the crystal/gold key.
wanted of the group. Mr. Kindilien noted that the students were very
well prepared and far more advanced that one would expect. “Most college
students will have a great appreciation for software, and are, in fact,
very comfortable with it. What impressed me was that SUES students had
a fairly strong grasp of software within the CAD/CAM industry. They
were fluent in the technology trends and research directions that many
of the top software companies, including Surfware, are invested in.
I believe these students will have a tremendous advantage in the manufacturing
marketplace because of this."
