Seattle, WA, USA--(Jobwerx)--APRIL 6, 2005--Textron Fastening Systems introduced its first commercial Intevia™ application during a news briefing today at Aircraft Interiors Expo 2005 in Hamburg. The company also demonstrated Intevia reconfiguration for aircraft cabins that allows installation and removal of seats in as little as five minutes, as well as rapid repositioning of monuments, stowage units, furniture, and class dividers.

Intevia intelligent fastening technology from Textron Fastening Systems, Inc. offers a wide array of potential design, assembly and service applications in aerospace, automotive, and electronics manufacturing.

Textron, Troy, Mich, signed a technology and partnership agreement with Telezygology Inc. (TZ), a wholly owned subsidiary of TZ Limited (ASX: TZL) for exclusive global rights to develop, commercialize and manufacture products using proprietary intelligent fastening technology developed by TZ, in December 2004, marketing them under the Intevia brand name.

TZ recently established its corporate headquarters in Chicago, Ill. Its parent company, TZ Limited, is headquartered in Sydney, Australia. A leader in development of intelligent fastening and assembly technology, TZ’s core activity is licensing intellectual property and operating software, along with application engineering and technology development services to global manufacturers. The mutual goal is to establish Intevia intelligent fastening as the standard worldwide operating system for a new era of design and assembly technology.

These Intevia-enabled systems enhance aircraft cabin security and provide an all new technology platform for cost-effective customization and maintainability of entire fleets and individual aircraft. Intevia systems comprise a network of mechanical fastening or locking devices driven by smart materials actuation, embedded microprocessing and integrated sensors for status reporting. Integrated intelligence enables applications software to manage system operation.

The first Intevia aerospace industry Intelligent Fastening Applications Systems symbolizes leading-edge technologies and breakthrough solutions and begins a series of applications that will be introduced in other critical markets during 2005, as well.

The aerospace industry's requirements for advanced maintenance procedures and aircraft reconfiguration is creating significant opportunities with the new Intevia latching and rapid reconfiguration solutions.

The company's first customer for the Intevia security latch is MacCarthy Interiors Ltd, a UK-based aircraft interior design, manufacture, and certification company. MacCarthy currently is the sole UK supplier of these devices and initially is applying them as an alternative to electro-mechanical locking systems in first- and business-class stowage units of commercial aircraft. MacCarthy's global aircraft interiors customers include Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, Emirates, KLM Airlines, and TNT Air-Freight.

The Intevia-enabled latch operates silently. With its slim profile, it mounts flush into aircraft monuments, and weighs substantially less than electro-mechanical devices now in use. The latch is controlled through a touch-sensitive cabinet door handle, which features LEDs that indicate the stowage unit door lock-unlock status. Intevia's integrated sensors and electronics manage and control latch functions while maintaining real-time reporting on latch system status.

Today, Textron Fastening Systems also introduced Intevia-enabled solutions that allow quick reconfiguration of seat systems in commercial aircraft and business jets. The solution enables installation and replacement of an aircraft seat in less than five minutes versus 45 minutes for manually unbolting seat mountings. The Intevia system verifies that the correct installation and replacement process is followed, and ensures that service is performed only by authorized technicians.

Example for automotive applications; Roof Racks: With the press of a button car owners could attach or remove roof racks and other accessories to reduce wind noise, drag, and vehicle height using Intevia intelligent fasteners. The process could be integrated into the central locking system, greatly increasing security and ease of use.

Electronics Application - Intevia™ intelligent fastening technology from Textron Fastening Systems Inc. Photos courtesy of Textron

Example for electronics applicaitons; Computer Peripherals: Cables connecting peripherals to computers are held in place by a screw-in connector. By integrating Intevia fasteners into these connections, mechanical and physical security can be controlled through computer instructions. An authorized command sent to the connector would allow removal of the peripheral, ensuring computer equipment security and the integrity of networked devices.

Intevia intelligent fastening represents the future of fastening, and is the centerpiece of a series of new value-added systems and technologies from Textron. These applications will change the ways products are assembled, maintained, serviced, and recycled.
