INSIGHT ARLINGTON, Va., USA - June 21, 2002 Silver Anvils are presented annually for public relations programs that successfully address issues with exemplary skill, creativity and resourcefulness. The Vinyl Institute, along with public relations agency Edward Howard & Co., Cleveland, Ohio, won the Silver Anvil for "Vinyl By Design: Educating Market Gatekeepers About the Value of Vinyl Building Products." The award was presented in one of three business-to-business marketing categories. Vinyl by Design is the largest ongoing outreach/education campaign ever created by the vinyl industry. Reflecting the rigorous nature of this competition, just 47 programs received a Silver Anvil and 45 others won the Award of Excellence from among 603 entries submitted for consideration. The Vinyl By Design program was developed following extensive market research revealing that architects and specifiers, the primary decision makers on materials selection in the construction marketplace, knew little about vinyl building products. The resulting program includes a continuing education component, media relations, trade show participation, advertising and ally development. A centerpiece of the program is a dedicated web site, http://www.vinylbydesign.com/, designed to be an authoritative source for design professionals about vinyl building products and their attributes. With the help of downstream associations and technical experts, comprehensive profiles were developed for eight vinyl building product categories (windows, roofing, siding, pipe, wallcovering, flooring, electrical materials and fencing, decking and railing) to help in making product selection decisions. Jeff Terry, director of industry affairs, rigids, and Mark Sofman, director of industry affairs, flexibles, manage the program for the Vinyl Institute. Allen Blakey, director of public affairs, manages communications for the program in conjunction with Edward Howard. The Vinyl Institute is a national trade association representing the leading manufacturers of vinyl (polyvinyl chloride) plastics, as well as makers of vinyl feedstocks, additives, and film and sheet products. Founded in 1982, the Institute is a member of the American Plastics Council. Edward Howard & Co. is the nation's longest established independent public relations and investor relations firm.
