Abstract-- Recycling CBT® Resins react to form a thermoplastic
PBT that has five proven recycling methods, more than any thermosetting
system and most thermoplastics.
CHEMICAL RECYCLING
1. Back to Cyclics - The PBT parts derived from CBT
Resins can be treated with a catalyst in the presence of a solvent
at elevated temperatures converting the PBT polymer matrix back to CBT
Resins. Additionally, fillers and fibers can be collected, washed and
subsequently reused.
2. Back to base chemicals - The PBT polymer matrix can readily
be converted back to its base chemicals, dimethylterephthalate and butanediol,
by treating the polymeric PBT at elevated temperatures and pressures with
methanol in the presence of a catalyst, followed by purification via distillate
methods. This process, known as methanolysis, is analogous to the recycling
strategy developed for the recycle of PET. As above, the reinforcing fiber
can be collected, washed and subsequently reused.
