Aluminum Armor Plate Need Satisfied for US Armored Vehicles

US Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command selects Alcoa for aluminum armor plate to support the new MRAP armored vehicles program.

Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announces that the US Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC) has selected the company’s North American Rolled Products business to supply a need for aluminum armor plate to support the new MRAP armored vehicle program. MRAP vehicles are designed to survive IED (improvised explosive devise) and ambush attacks.

Alcoa serves the aerospace, automotive, packaging, building and construction, commercial transportation and industrial markets.

The TACOM LCMC defense contract for defense industry original equipment manufacturers by Alcoa Defense is valued at $31.7 million.

Shipments of the aluminum plate will begin in November 2007 and run through June 2008.

Headquartered at the Detroit Arsenal in Warren, MI, the Army’s TACOM Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC) is the U.S. military’s premier ground vehicle center. The TACOM LCMC unites all of the organizations that focus on soldier and ground systems throughout the entire life cycle. With over 14,000 employees world-wide who are dedicated to getting products to the Soldier faster, making good products even better, and minimizing life cycle cost, TACOM manages over 3,000 end items and over 29,000 components.

The aluminum armor plate will be produced at Alcoa’s Davenport, Iowa, USA Works. Most of the material is slated to be delivered to the US Army TACOM facility at the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Illinois. Average deliveries of aluminum armor plate will exceed 1 million pounds per month during the contract. Other U.S. Army Depots may be specified for delivery during the term of the defense contract.
