SMW Automotive Hong Kong alliance with Alcoa

Signed agreement with SMW Automotive Hong Kong by Alcoa to produce cast aluminum chassis and suspension components and modules for the automotive industry in Asia Pacific region.

Under the agreement, Alcoa plans to license its Vacuum Riserless and Pressure Riserless Casting (VRC/PRC) technology and sell related production assets.

SMW Hong Kong’s new wholly owned subsidiary, Alutech Automotive Parts, Ltd. of China, will establish an aluminum casting plant in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China to supply OEMs in China, South Korea, Japan and the Asia Pacific region with cast structural parts using Alcoa's proprietary technology. The plant is slated to be operational in 2008. In addition, the agreement provides the framework for both companies to identify, develop and launch programs.

“This marks our official establishment of a commercial footprint in China and complements and adds to Alcoa’s current VRC/PRC aluminum casting capabilities in the U.S. and Europe,” said Misha Riveros Jacobson, President, Alcoa Auto and Truck Structures.

SMW Automotive Hong Kong is a wholly owned subsidiary of Concord International, a privately held Tier 1 supplier of chassis, brake components and systems headquartered in Troy, Michigan with operations in the U.S., Canada, France, Brazil, and China.

VRC: Vacuum Riserless Casting
A modified Low pressure permanent mold which uses vacuum to bottom fill a mold cavity from a molten aluminum bath, NO RISER.
VRC was developed in 1950’s by Alcoa Casting/ Forging Research Lab and commercialized in the 1960’s

Features
. Vertical hydraulic press with a steel mold (upper and lower halves) bolted to the machines lower platen and sealed against the crucible furnace
. Continuous metal delivered to the crucible
. Vacuum system connected to the steel mold to pull gasses out of the mold cavities (VRC)
. Pressure applied on the molten metal surface (PRC)
. Mold cavities vertically filled from the bottom
. Two sizes of machines in production in three separate locations

PRC: Pressure Riserless Casting

PRC: Pressure Riserless Casting
A modified Low pressure permanent mold which uses Pressure to bottom fill a mold cavity from a molten aluminum bath, NO RISER.
PRC was added in 1985 by Alcoa Casting /Forging Research Lab

Advantages
. Metal Source under mold cavity acts as feeder
. Metal level is constant, continuous / no batch
. Back-surging of molten metal into holding furnace is eliminated
. Reduced oxides and gas porosity
. High casting yield - up to +95% net/gross weight

Controlled bottom filling with progressive top down solidification

. Minimum metal turbulence
. Reduced oxides & shrinkage porosity
. Directional solidification obtained by focused cooling circuits with appropriate delay/duration timings.
