How to Be GREEN (even save money) with “OIL” Article Continues

AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants Signature Series Motor Oil Article Continued from Page 1

The price of a premium synthetic engine oil, for example, can be set against lower oil consumption, lengthened drain periods, increased parts life, reduced maintenance costs, better performance, reduced emissions, and resource conservation; overall -- cost effective.

Sustainable Practices

Even in production, synthetics tread more lightly on the environment. Because synthetics perform much longer, fewer products overall are produced for a given customer’s needs. This means less packaging, less resultant waste, less disposal, and, overall, less energy used in production and distribution.

(Some Related Insight -- Synthetic lubricants are as different from each other as they differ from crude oil based lubricants. There is no single, accepted definition for “synthetic” lubricants. Price is not always a comparable benchmark. Synthetics sold in some specialty/sporting equipment stores may be priced very high. For conventional oil companies, synthetic lubricants represent only token interest compared to their conventional products. And there is at least one popular major brand product marketed as a synthetic that uses highly refined crude oil for its base stock.)

World Turmoil

In 2003, the US’s voracious appetite for crude oil – almost four times more than the nearest consumer (China) – was 20 million barrels per day. Although the US is an oil producer, pumping 11.1 million barrels daily, a major shortfall needs to be filled.

Washington – Soaring demand for crude oil in China, India, and other developing nations has set off a scramble to secure future energy supplies that could undermine the economic and national security of the United States.
Oil Supply and Demand, Kevin G. Hall, Knight Rider News Service, The Oregonian, May 4, 2005

Turmoil and growing demand have placed the US into a position of increasing competition for foreign-controlled crude oil. “The developing world’s growing appetite is one reason gasoline prices have shot up for Americans,” writes Hall.

Grasp the Opportunity

For most of us, synthetic lubricants represent an unrealized opportunity.

Whether you’re a soccer mom, operate a lawn care firm, drive thousands of miles as a Realtor, crunch tax numbers, go RV’ing, build web sites, enjoy boating, have a hay farm, operate a fleet of vehicles, run a construction company, manufacture food products, sell native plants -- put AMSOIL premium synthetic lubricants to work for you, your pocketbook, and the environment. When it comes to “green,” this is a practice all of us can do.

True Value is not price – but what a service or product can do

-Reduced fuel consumption – saves money
-Extended application intervals – improved productivity
-Longer equipment life – higher return on capital investment
-Informed decision-making – enhanced maintenance
-Premium quality products – maximum value
-Reduced dependence on foreign oil
-Reduced environmental impact
-Recyclable
-Cost effective
-Long-term value
-Made in the USA
-Higher Quality Costs Less

Synthetic lubricants are a worthy option. You can be Green, save money, help our planet – all with the right kind of “oil!”

-- Addendum to article – A Look at Numbers (and “It’s only a penny”)

A comparison of oil and filter usage for the Alabama Department of Finance fleet mentioned in the article.

Under the AMSOIL extended drain program with 5W30 premium synthetic engine oil and the latest oil filter technology, each vehicle has its oil and filter changed every 25,000 miles or one year, whichever first.

Comparison -- Conventional vs AMSOIL Premium Synthetic

200 vehicles -- Average annual vehicle mileage = 23,500
Oil and Filter change pre-AMSOIL = 3,000 – 5,000 miles (5,000 miles used here for comparison)

Oil and Filter Changes = X [5 quarts and 1 filter]

Conventional AMSOIL

Begin X X
5K X ----
10K X ----
15K X ----
20K X ----
23,500 ---- X (average end of year mileage)
Per vehicle totals
25 Qts-5 filters 10 Qts – 2 filters
Per fleet totals
1,250 gal engine oil 500 gal engine oil
1,000 oil filters 400 oil filters

The AMSOIL maintenance program results in 60% savings in oil and filter quantities (even more if a 3,000 mile interval were used). For Total Cost Accounting, add in savings in labor, inventory, ordering, down time, accounting, waste, disposal, scheduling.

“It’s only a penny”

Most people won’t stop to pick up a penny in a parking lot. Likewise, to many, it may seem insignificant to change the vehicle engine oil from conventional (crude-oil based) to American-made AMSOIL premium synthetic.

Here’s a widescreen look –

In 2004 an estimated 243 million motorized vehicles were on the road in the US alone and an estimated 800 million motorized vehicles in operation throughout the world. Assuming an average service life of 100,000 miles and a 5-quart oil capacity each, 20.2 billion to 40.5 billion quarts of used oil will be generated during a regular service lifetime (oil changes every 3,000 to 6,000 miles).

If you put 40.5 billion quarts of used oil in 55-gallon barrels and lined them up, this line would stretch from Los Angeles to Washington, DC and back 12 times.

AMSOIL recommends 5 to 11 times fewer oil changes (up to 35,000 mile drain intervals). Think about the savings on the environment, resource conservation, and reduced dependence on foreign oil, for example, if the 243 million cars (excludes trucks, buses, and taxis) in the US were equipped with AMSOIL synthetic engine oil.

It adds up - really adds up.
